POSITION TITLE : Communications Specialist I
REPORTS TO : Director of Communications and Public Relations
POSITION SUMMARY : The Communications Specialist I will report directly to the Director of Communications and Public Relations to assist in the development, implementation, and promotion of positive communications to the Hazelwood School District community.
The Communications Specialist I will also assist with coordinating special events, fundraising, and other special projects.
In addition, they will respond positively to students, staff, administrators, parents, community, and the media.
FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB
Essential Functions
- Protects and promotes the Hazelwood School District brand, students, Board, and staff.
- Serves as information liaison between the total school system and the community at large.
- Builds and maintains positive relationships between the schools and the Communications and Public Relations Department in order to develop a databank of potential news stories.
- Utilizes excellent writing skills to help develop timely media releases, as well as copy for brochures, newsletters, Website, HSD social media channels, and any other promotional materials.
- Takes pictures of District and school activities.
- Maintains open lines of communication with all community organizations and provides prompt responses to requests for public information about the district, its policies, and its programs.
- Communicates with the Director of Communications and Public Relations on the probable public relation consequences relating to shifts in existing programs, policies, and social media trends.
- Manages planning, scheduling, and set-up of District events, activities, and employee engagement programs.
- Obtains information from various sources for District use.
- Provides support to the Director of Communications and Public Relations in the coordination of election campaigns.
- Provides media relations support for the Director of Communications and Public Relations.
- Serves as point of contact and manages event planning.
- Assists with administrative support details for the Director of Communications and Public Relations when needed.
- Other general duties as assigned.
Marginal Functions
- Assists the Director of Communications and Public Relations in explaining public opinion to the staff of the school system.
- Stays abreast of professional practices in the field.
Physical / Visual Activities or Demands : Physical / visual activities or demands that are commonly associated with the performance of the functions of this job.
- Walking, driving, sitting, climbing, stooping or crouching, reaching, feeling, talking, hearing.
- Normal attention with clarity of vision at 20 inches or less as well as 20 feet or more, required
- Light to moderate physical demand with regular lifting of very light to light (1 to 25 items by hand and occasional lifting of average (25 to 60 items by hand or with mechanical assistance.
- May be required to work some nights and weekends.
Environmental / Atmospheric Conditions : Environmental and atmospheric conditions commonly associated with the performance of the functions of this job.
Subject to both inside and outside working conditions, with exposure to noise sufficient to make it necessary to shout at times.
POSITION QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
Education : Bachelor’s degree is required. Emphasis in communications, journalism, public relations, business, or related field is preferred.
Experience : Two-three years minimum previous experience in the communications / public relations role.
