The Generation Services Engineering intern offers technical support to NCPA's Generation Services team, assisting with the agency's Combustion Turbine, Geothermal, and Hydroelectric Power Plant facilities.
This position provides hands-on experience in Power Plant Engineering, encompassing both electrical and mechanical disciplines, as well as Asset Management, Power Plant Information (PI) systems and database applications, Project Management, and NERC compliance.
The intern will also have the opportunity to tour NCPA's Power Plants, attend professional meetings, and potentially present findings or updates to leadership teams
This position will work 40 hours per week during Summer 2025 in Roseville, CA.
Examples of Duties :
This role involves developing thermodynamic models to benchmark combustion turbine and geothermal power systems, as well as creating fluid dynamic models to benchmark hydroelectric turbines.
You will assist with preparing and maintaining electrical schematic documentation, contribute to organizing NERC Standards compliance records, and design calculation tools using spreadsheets.
Additionally, you will support investigations into equipment degradation or failures, prepare and present technical reports, and participate in on-site investigations of equipment issues in collaboration with plant engineers and site personnel.
Qualifications :
Academic status at an accredited college or university taking courses as a full-time student leading to an Electrical or Mechanical Engineering degree or a degree in a field related to the work which is performed.
An emphasis in power generation, rotating machines, distribution engineering, renewable generation resources, system protection or fluid power systems is preferred.
Knowledge of :
- Thermodynamics, Fluid Dynamics, Electrical Fundamentals, and Materials of Science
- Technical writing, Excel spreadsheet functions
- Upper division of Mechanical or Electrical Engineering
Ability to :
- Resolve conflict in the workplace
- Be self-paced and motivated and request help when needed
- Travel to work sites when needed (accompanied by other GS personnel)
- Identify and flag safety concerns
- Make oral and written reports / presentations
