What is a Hockey Broadcast Operator?
Are you a hockey fan? Do you have experience working in a broadcast environment, or always wanted to work in sports broadcast?
Are you an avid gamer used to reacting to fast-paced action monitors and communicating with your teammates? If you answered yes, we have got just the opportunity for you at SportsMedia Technology (SMT) as a hockey broadcast operator for the 2024 / 25 NHL season.
As a Hockey Broadcast Operator, you will bring a passion for hockey and sports, novice technical experience, comfortability with Windows-based machines, and strong communication and customer service skills.
Your role requires an exceptional attention span to simultaneously monitor computer applications, follow the events of the game without distraction, and effectively communicate with other team members and broadcast clients
This opportunity reports to SMT’s Remote Production Studio in Durham, NC and supports NHL broadcasts through broadcast graphics and data tracking features.
You will be working directly with our puck- and player-tracking system to incorporate broadcast graphics and replay packages into broadcasts on ESPN, TNT and regional sports networks.
What is Your Daily Impact at SMT?
As a Hockey Broadcast Operator, you will report to our studio two hours before puck drop to check in for your assigned game.
Game shifts are typically 5-6 hours. You will collaborate with our studio staff, on-site SMT personnel at the arena and our broadcast partners to ensure our technology is skating at full speed and ready to take the ice.
We prep our operators on team specific insights and narratives to help producers tell their story for broadcast.
Additional responsibilities include :
- Operate the graphics and replay systems during games
- Quickly process feedback from the system and adjust in real-time
- Relay system issues to support staff for repair or replacement
- Work well under pressure and complete tasks on time
- Follow daily checklists and other written procedures
What Do You Bring to SMT?
- Knowledge of computer hardware, software, and Windows OS
- Extensive PC gaming skills (use of hotkeys and gaming mice)
- Basic understanding of hockey terminology, NHL rules and game play
- A customer service and collaborative mentality
- Basic network troubleshooting knowledge
- Open availability (must be available to night, weekend and holiday games)
- Strong communication skills
- Excellent attention to detail

Our broadcast operators start at $18 / hour and provide flexible scheduling, with most game shifts being at night or on the weekend, perfect for the college student seeking sports or broadcast experience, or a hockey fan seeking their new side hustle.
You will get to work in a highly collaborative and supportive environment, and as our remote studio continues to expand and support other sports, high performing operators will be given the chance to work with different sports broadcasts.
