About the Department

Welcome to the Department of Cultural and Behavioral Sciences at Georgia State University Perimeter College. We are a diverse department that offers pathways of study focused on the academic and applied investigations of how humans interact-behaviorally, geographically, instructionally, socially and culturally.

Position Description

Perimeter College invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in sociology. Field of specialization is open.

Perimeter College is a multi-campus institution in a major metropolitan area, and the teaching assignment may be on any of the college's five campuses.

The successful applicant will be expected to :

  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to early undergraduate teaching and learning, and the ability to create a sense of belonging for all students, in the in-person and virtual learning environments
  • Teach nine courses (27 semester hours) per academic year, divided across Fall and Spring terms. Summer teaching is an option but neither required nor guaranteed.
  • Courses will include Introduction to Sociology and may include Introduction to Social Problems, Introduction to Marriage and Family, and others based on institutional need and faculty interest.
  • Maintain weekly office hours; assist students via email and other communication modalities.
  • Contribute to the department, college, and university through service activities, including but not limited to committee work.
  • Keep abreast of advances in the discipline and in pedagogical practice via professional development activities, which may include original research or other scholarly work.
  • Attend meetings, commencements, and other university functions as needed.

Required Education

Ph.D. in Sociology from accredited institution. Terminal degree must be conferred by employment start date.

Preferred Qualifications / Experience

In addition to required education and experience, the following qualifications are preferred :

  • Experience teaching online and using a distance learning platform.
  • Experience or demonstrated interest in high-impact educational practices, scholarship of teaching and learning, building college-to-career linkages, global learning, and / or other pedagogical initiatives that enhance student success.
  • Experience or demonstrated interest in scholarship in the discipline and / or discipline and institutional service.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to teach a variety of sociology classes at the college level
  • Ability to teach in a variety of modalities
  • Ability to evaluate and potentially adopt a variety of pedagogical practices
  • Ability to relate to and foster learning among a diverse student population
  • Ability to collaborate with colleagues to achieve discipline, department, or college goals
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated knowledge of instructional technology
