Hydroponics Facility Manager Trainee will be responsible for managing horticulture, specifically hydroponics facilities including hydroponic farming and aquaculture, outdoors and indoors, in an atrium, at the greenhouse, landscaped gardens, and for classroom needs for teaching purposes.
Duties include taking care of plants, processing orders for the horticulture / hydroponics grant program as well as supporting faculty in botany and biology classes.
The technician is responsible for laboratory safety, maintains the inventory of equipment and supplies, and performs additional duties as assigned.
POSITION SUMMARY
Responsibilities include but are not limited to :
- Prepare instructional labs as directed by instructors, including setup of equipment, tool, and supply inventory; process orders for the program as needed.
- Develop and maintain a plant materials inventory; development and maintain an equipment, tool, and supply inventory; process orders for the program as needed.
- Manage student part-time workers and volunteers, along with needed pay reporting.
- Water, prune, weed, trim, and fertilize greenhouse and clear debris.
- Perform minor mechanical work and maintenance on a variety of operating equipment and irrigation systems. Utilize proper safety precautions.
- Work with other department to enhance the Bergen environment using Horticulture, including working on Open Houses, special events on and off campus, and other BCC opportunities.
- Write work orders as needed for necessary trades to perform repair, maintenance functions.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS AND SPECIAL SKILLS
Education : Associate’s degree required
- Methods, practices, equipment, and tools used in the maintenance of greenhouse and garden areas and facilities.
- Soil and temperature conditions for growing a variety of plants.
- Principles and procedures of record keeping.
- Safe work practices.
Ability to :
- Must be able to work independently with little or no supervision.
- Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work faculty, staff, multicultural students, and visitors.
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Use and operate hand tools, mechanical equipment, and power tools and equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
- Recognize weeds, insects, and diseases harmful to assigned area.
