Job Description

TheChallenge CourseCoordinatorworkstoprovideexperientialeducationandrecreationactivities forthe students,faculty,staff,alumni,MagicValleyCommunity,andsurroundingcommunities.

Thispositionrequiresa proactiveproblemsolverwithcourageousleadershipandvisiontoactindependently.The coordinator is responsible for the operations andmanagement of the CSI Challenge Course.

his employee must have the ability to work effectively with students, faculty, staff, and administration as well as area schools and businesses.

Demonstrate a hands-on approach to programming and experiential education training of students along with openness to new and innovative techniques and the ability to incorporate progressive ideas in the outdoor recreation field.

Manage a staff of30 employees including recruitment, hiring, onboarding, continuing education and termination. Weekend and evening hours will be necessary to carry out duties.

DutiesandResponsibilities

  • Compose,disseminate,andenforcepoliciesandproceduresofChallenge Course
  • Train,supervise,motivate,andevaluatestaffandassistthemintheperformanceoftheirdutiesand responsibilities.
  • Workindependentlyas wellasinateamatmosphere.
  • Understandlegalaspectsrelatedtorecreationprogramming and incorporatestandards into the College of Southern Idaho Challenge Course and outdoor programs.
  • Understand best practices in operating the activities of the Challenge Course includingindustrystandardspromotedbythevaryingcertifyingbodiessuchastheACCT, PCIA and others.
  • PlanandcoordinateChallengeCourse indoor and outdoor activities.
  • Overseeandtrainfacilitatorswithinlimitsestablishedbynationalstandards.
  • Supervisecourseandelementmaintenanceandsafetyinspections.
  • Coordinate the purchase of suppliesandequipment to ensure the course remains safe.
  • Developandcoordinatemarketingplan.
  • Marketcoursetoareaschools,churches,leadershipgroups,businesses,andinterested parties.
  • Schedulecourseuseandassignmentoffacilitators.
  • Processhiringandpayrollforfacilitators,assistants,andtechnicians.
  • Manage budget, processexpendituresanddeposits,approveandprocesspayablesandreceivables,and oversee / maintain accounting system.
  • Planandattendstudentactivitiesandleadershipretreats.
  • Assist with Outdoor Rental Shop activities : rentals and trips as needed
  • Attendandadvisemonthlystaffmeetings.
  • Planandattendtrainingsasneededforstaff.
  • Advisemarketingavenuesinternallyandattendadvertisingopportunities.
  • Approveandassistwithstudentactivitiesutilizingexperientialeducationphilosophy.
  • Monitoroutcomesofoutingswithevaluations.
  • Receiveofficevisitorsandhandleinquiriesinaknowledgeablemanner.
  • Prepareduplicatesanddistributecorrespondenceandmailings.
  • Maintainconfidentialitywithallmatters.
  • Oversight and management of social media accounts for Challenge Course.

QualificationsandSkills

Required

Equivalenttograduationfromafour-yearcollegeoruniversitypreferablywithamajorin sports management, recreation administration, outdoor education, physical education, kinesiology / exercise science, business administration, or related field.

OREquivalentworkexperienceinrelevantrole-fieldtime,workexperience, management with an ability to complete a degree.

  • AbilitytoreceiveandmaintainACCTmembershipandcertification.*Pendingannual approval.
  • Excellentcommunicationskillsandexperienceaswellassuperiorskillsandexperience working in diverse groups of people in a courteous and effective manner.
  • Sufficientcomputerskillstoeffectivelyoperatethefollowingprograms : Windows,Office Publisher / Graphics, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint.
  • Provenabilitytosuccessfullyorganizeandmanageamultitudeofprojectswithattention to detail.
  • ManagementandSupervisionexperience.
  • Finance and budgetingexperience.
  • PossesscurrentFirst Aid & CPR certification (or ability to acquire)
  • Communicateeffectivelyandprofessionallybothverballyandinwriting.
  • Abletomaintainconfidentialitywithallmatters.
  • Abilitytoadapttochangesintheworkenvironment.
  • Strongserviceorientationwithexcellentinterpersonalcommunicationskills.
  • Abilitytopromoteteamworkandmanagechallengingsituationswhilecourteously responding to changing socioeconomic and dynamic groups.

  • Atleasttwoyearsofrelevantchallengecourseexperience(includingGraduate Assistantship).
  • Previoussupervisoryexperienceinhighereducationandcampusrecreationdesired.
  • Preferexperiencedevelopingqualitystudentprogramsandimplementingrisk management policies for safe facilities and programs.
  • TrainingsandcertificationsthroughindustryorganizationliketheAssociation for Challenge
  • CourseTechnology,AmericanMountain Guide Association, Professional ClimbingInstructorAssociation,AmericanCanoeAssociation,LeaveNoTraceCenter for Environmental Ethics, Project Adventure, Association of Challenge Course Technology etc.
  • Experiencewithevent / fundraiserorganization,marketingandpromotion.
  • Activeinvolvementinnationaloutdoor,wilderness,recreationandconservation organizations (ACCT, AORE, NIRSA, etc.)
  • Demonstratedabilitytoprovideinstructionandpossesstechnicalproficiencyinavariety of outdoor applications including kayaking, backpacking, stand-up paddle boarding, mountain biking, rock climbing, whitewater rafting, snow shoeing, cross-countryskiingetc.
  • Marketingandpublicationsexperience
