Title

Supervisor, Clinical Nutrition-2

Reporting to the System Manager Clinical Nutrition, the Supervisor of Clinical Nutrition provides day-to-day clinical direction to Clinical Nutrition team, assigns work, prepares work schedules, and serves as a resource to ensure a smooth operation.

Under minimal supervision and according to established guidelines, provides professional services to the hospital inpatients, outpatients, staff, and community groups.

The Supervisor of Clinical Nutrition serves as the primary point of leadership contact for clinical nutrition team.

Leadership responsibilities include but are not necessarily limited to :

  • Scheduling of Clinical Dietitians
  • Competency assessment review
  • Annual performance review
  • Interviewing, hiring, performance evaluation, discipline, etc.

Direct patient care including but not limited to, screening of patient nutritional status, assessing of laboratory values and other pertinent medical data, developing appropriate care plans, monitoring the nutritional status of patients, counseling of patient and / or family on special nutritional requirements, consulting with other health care personnel (physician, nurse, pharmacist, social worker, etc.) As appropriate.

As appropriate and necessary, the Supervisor of Clinical Nutrition assists in matters relating to quality assurance, productivity, menu development, manuals, coordination, patient education materials, standards of care, patient food review, participates on hospital committees, planning, and staff training.

This role plays a critical role in supporting the highest possible patient satisfaction levels and ensures program efficacy.

The incumbent must be proficient with the software appropriate for their department (i.e. EPIC, Health Touch) and demonstrate a thorough understanding of department charges / charge order set(s), department CDM, and charge capture processes (including reconciliation and error correction).

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Employees providing direct patient care must demonstrate competencies specific to the population served.

Qualifications :

  • Credentialed as a Registered Dietitian or Registered Dietitian Nutritionist by the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) required.
  • Must demonstrate strong interpersonal communication and customer service skills
  • Basic math and computer skills are required; strong analytical skills preferred
  • A highly qualified candidate must be able to demonstrate tolerance for high-stress and ambiguous situations and an ability to make appropriate decisions under pressure
  • Demonstrated experience managing conflict and problem-solving skills required
  • Adaptability to working in group settings and alone, required

Position requirements / work load / expectations

  • Provides day-to-day clinical direction to the Dietitian staff necessary for a smooth operation.
  • Develops and implements productivity standards and participates in the performance evaluation process. Recommends discipline when necessary
  • Assigns work and prepares work schedules.
  • Communicates approved policies and procedures to Dietitians and ensures compliance. Recommends changes when necessary and participates in the development and implementation of such changes.
  • Ensures departmental compliance with all JCAHO standards.
  • Conducts nutritional assessments of patients who are or may become malnourished or as ordered by the physician. Evaluates history and physical data, laboratory tests, clinical data, nutrient intake, allergies or intolerances, mechanical or physiological status, and any social, cultural, or religious factors which influence diet or nutrition status.
  • Develops and implements a plan of care which includes various nutrition and dietary approaches to therapy, discharge planning, and patient / family educational needs.

Integrates this plan with the overall patient care plan including the establishment of therapeutic goals. Provides instruction on therapeutic diets as necessary.

  • Provides education to physicians, nursing staff, students, other health care professionals and the public regarding nutritional therapy.
  • Serves as a resource person to nutrition service personnel for nutrition questions, checks menu preparation and food service delivery for accuracy.
  • Monitors and evaluates patient clinical and biochemical progress and status including tolerance to therapy, intake / output, weight, pertinent diagnostic data, complications of therapy, drug interactions, etc.

Recommends modifications of care plans. Initiates and evaluates changes in treatment. Collaborates with team members regarding medical nutrition therapy.

Evaluates and modifies therapeutic goals when advisable.

  • Participates in patient continuum of care planning, some of which includes education to patients, appropriate family members and or care providers regarding nutritional therapy.
  • Participates in physician and inter-disciplinary team rounds and care conferences. Collaborates on the identification and resolution of problems related to nutritional therapy.
  • Maintains complete and accurate records of all activities including patient care and status.
  • Collaborates with staff members in identifying and resolving nutrition equipment or procedural problems and issues. Works to correct deficiencies.
  • Participates in quality assurance activities. Shares findings from monitoring and collaborates on the development and implementation of action plans to correct deficiencies.
  • Controls nutritional supplement and nourishment costs to meet budget allocations by monitoring the appropriateness and cost effectiveness of the mode of nutritional support.

Coordinates revenue generating programs and processes data in a timely and accurate fashion. Ensure outcomes of nutrition therapy are cost effective.

  • Maintains up to date knowledge of advances and developments in clinical dietetics.
  • Incorporates current and appropriate research findings into clinical practice. Based upon this knowledge, participates in the review of new products and equipment related to nutritional therapy.
  • Is responsible for reconciling daily charges at the patient level detail, monitoring gross charges daily, and identifying and investigating variances.
  • Verifies system interface daily (as applicable) and, upon request, will obtain, review and correct error report.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to providing outstanding customer service in a manner that is reflective of our mission, values, and customer service standards.
  • Maintains a working knowledge of applicable Federal, State and local laws and regulations, the Compliance Accountability Program, Code of Ethics, as well as other policies and procedures in order to ensure adherence in a manner that reflects honest, ethical and professional behavior.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
  • Maintains a safe workplace by keeping work area free of hazards and correcting and / or properly reporting any safety hazards.
  • Uses correct body positioning, proper body mechanics to avoid injury, utilizes safe work practices (e.g. pushing vs. pulling, patient transfer / lifting devices, etc.

and uses personal protective equipment when necessary.

Position includes work which produces high levels of mental / visual fatigue, e.g., interactive and repetitive or small detailed work requiring alertness and concentration for sustained periods of time, the operation of and full attention to a personal computer or CRT between 40 and 70 percent of the time.

Involves considerable standing or walking, regular lifting of light-weight objects (i.e., 20 pounds or less) and assisting with heavier tasks such as assisting in lifting and moving patients.

Minor straining or fatiguing positions must be assumed, and some fatiguing physical motions are required.
