DEFINITION
- Under the administrative direction of the Director of IS / CTO in a team environment, the Business Systems Architect is responsible for developing, maintaining, optimizing, enhancing, and administering the Agency's business systems;
- supporting business systems applications; coding and scripting routines for business systems applications; testing and evaluating of business systems functionality;
- researching vendor requirement to apply patches and upgrades to fix the business systems applications or platforms; developing of end user reports;
- querying data from the business systems; coordinating with other departments to analyze current processes, provide solutions and implement new systems;
- performing programming duties including modifying delivered code and creating custom code as needed; and developing procedures to ensure optimum stability, integrity, access, and response of the business systems applications;
and performs related duties as assigned.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
The Business Systems Architect is an expert and / or the lead level classification. The classification may be responsible for leading a team of staff engaged in performing a full range of project management work as well as independently performing difficult and complex analytical and product management duties.
Work requires demonstrated business analysis capabilities, project management, negotiation skills and strong critical thinking and communication skills, as well as the ability to integrate ideas and effort of technical and non-technical team members to achieve expected results.
The Business Systems Architect typically works under the direction of the Information Systems Supervisor. The classification is expected to exercise sound judgment in carrying out responsibilities independently within the framework of established policies, protocols, and service standards.
The Business Systems Architect is distinguished from Information Systems Supervisor in that the latter performs the most complex and specialized information systems work and may provide direction to persons in the analyst classifications.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES
- Plans, tests, installs, configures, customizes, and maintains applications including Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS), Enterprise Asset Management (EAM), and Enterprise Document Management (EDM).
- Develops, maintains, and manages test plans used for application upgrades.
- Creates and maintains interfaces between applications.
- Creates custom reports and extracts data from applications using vendor supplied tools and SQL queries.
- Creates scripts to automate tasks and other functions.
- Assists in the selection of hardware, software, and services.
- Communicates with outside agencies regarding the installation and configuration of hardware and software systems.
- Provides support for all applications in the organization including those applications they may not be directly responsible for.
- Plans, tests, installs, configures, customizes, and maintains the document management system including development of workflow, process routines and automations.
- Functions as a liaison between City users and software providers.
- Provides assistance with budget development and project cost estimates.
- Coordinates special projects related to enterprise application platforms.
- Analyzes business systems and offers steps and solutions to streamline processes.
- Works with departments to effectively use the software tools provided to staff.
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

- Working understanding of computer programming principles, techniques and procedures for business and technical systems.

Required Education and Experience :
Any combination of experience and education / training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.
A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be :
Equivalent to a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major work in Computer Science, Information Systems, Business Administration, or a related field and six (6) years of increasingly responsible experience involving the planning, development, installation, implementation, integration, testing, and evaluation of information technology systems.
Licenses and Certifications :
- Possession of a valid California Motor Vehicle Driver’s license and be insurable with the Agency’s insurance at the standard rate and continue to meet the established driving standards as a condition of employment for this position.
- One or more of the following certifications are desirable : Certified Business Analysis Professional (CBAP), Professional in Business Analysis (PMI-PBA), Project Management Professional (PMP), or equivalent certifications.
Physical Demands
- Standing & Walking Primarily sedentary classification although standing in work areas and walking between work areas may be required.
- Lifting - Ability to safely lift up to 10 pounds overhead and 20 pounds to waist level.
- Manual Dexterity - Ability to perform multiple work activities requiring a significant level of physical and mental coordination.
