Job Description

The Architectural historian / Historian for Oklahoma Department of Transportation works under supervision within a four-person team of subject matter experts in identification and National Register of Historic Places evaluation of historic-age resources of the built environment.

As authorized agents consulting with the State Historic Preservation Office and other consulting parties, the Architectural Historian conducts evaluations of resources of the built environment for transportation undertakings.

These include roadway improvements, sidewalk projects, participation and review of mitigation efforts for adverse effects to historic properties, and review and preparation of context studies.

The work is a comfortable mix of fieldwork, report preparation, and oversight of consultant-prepared cultural resources survey and mitigation reports.

The position provides for a mix of telework, fieldwork, and office work, as needed.

Job duties include, but are not limited to :

  • Performs fieldwork as needed to make observations and collect data.
  • Analyzes and interprets data.
  • Presents research results and prepares research for publication.
  • Procures supplies and equipment needed for laboratory and field operations.
  • Conducts literature searches as needed.
  • Assists with the preparation, identification, and cataloging of information and specimens.
  • Performs various duties as needed to successfully fulfill the function of the position.

Job Requirements

Required Education : Bachelor's degree in a related field, AND :

24 months of related research experience

Equivalency / Substitution : Will accept 48 months of related experience in lieu of the Bachelor's degree for a total of 72 months of related experience.

Skills :

  • Conducts project tasks as a Subject Matter Expert in historic-age resources of the built environment, including structures, buildings, and districts
  • Plans and conducts architectural surveys individually and as part of a team for Oklahoma Department of Transportation federal-aid undertakings.
  • Prepares and reviews documentation to support National Register evaluations and effect determinations
  • Demonstrated solution-oriented approach and able to work with others to find mutually-acceptable solutions
  • Generate and evaluates alternatives to recommend sound solutions applying the appropriate rule, policy, or procedure, or suggest new methods and procedures, as needed
  • Works effectively with other agencies, private parties, and professional organizations
  • Strong customer-service skills
  • Ability to manage time effectively
  • Ability to speak, read and write clear, concise English
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office
  • Highly organized and able to handle multiple projects and deadlines
  • Able to produce reports and complete work within deadlines
  • Able to work well with interdepartmental teams and initiatives
  • Must be able to read and interpret policy as well as State and Federal regulations
  • Able to effectively evaluate projects / programs and produce comprehensive reports
  • Composition and proofreading skills
  • Must have advanced / proficient / writing skills for composing audits, reports and advisories

Advertised Physical Requirements :

  • Must be able to communicate effectively in written and conversational format. Must be able to conduct fieldwork consistent with the architectural history profession (conduct in-field review, prepare documentation forms, prepare National Register evaluations and nominations).
  • Travel statewide with occasional overnight stay

Departmental Preferences :

  • Architectural field survey experience such as but not limited to large scale surveys of corridors, cities, or municipalities.
  • Possesses familiarity with related legislation such as the National Historic Preservation Act, Section 4(f) of the US DOT Act and competency in comprehending laws, policies, rules and regulations related to historic resources.
  • Masters Degree in Architectural History, Historic Architecture, Historic Preservation, History, or closely-related field with demonstrated fieldwork, report production, inventory and assessment of built environment
  • Able to meet Secretary of Interior Qualifications for a historian, architectural historian, or closely related field (36 CFR 61)
  • Experience with ArcGIS is a plus
