    HIRING RANGE : $49,670-$62,088 / ANNUALLY DOQ

    SALARY RANGE : $49,670-$74,505 / ANNUALLY

    NATURE OF WORK

    The Community Service Officer (CSO) position is an entry-level position within the Frederick Police Department. The CSO is responsible for investigating municipal code violations and enforcing ordinances regarding junk and abandoned vehicles, weeds, brush and rubbish, animals, and signs.

    The CSO assists police officers, investigators and records personnel with tasks that do not require the presence of a commissioned officer.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    The duties listed herein are illustrative of the essential duties of the job, and do not include all duties that may be required.

    Investigate local code violations and enforce Frederick’s municipal code regarding junk and abandoned vehicles, weeds, brush and rubbish, animals, and signs.

    Issue warnings and / or citations as necessary.

    • Assist officers of the Frederick Police Department with traffic control and motor vehicle accident investigations at the direction of the supervising officer.
    • Perform animal control duties and be familiar with all equipment used therein.
    • The Community Service Officer shall be trained and certified in other areas applicable to his / her position as determined by the Chief of Police or a designee thereof.
    • Perform community problem-solving functions and become involved in community wellness and quality of life issues.
    • Receive complaints on minor theft reports, and report such information to the police officer on duty as soon as possible.

    The Community Service Officer must collect complete, accurate information.

    • Complete forms and reports related to all duties as required by the Chief of Police or a designee thereof.
    • Perform other duties as assigned by the Chief of Police or a designee thereof.
    • Assist in staffing the customer service desk at the Police Department. The Community Service Officer shall work to improve customer service efficiency and effectiveness.
    • May work varying schedules and / or shifts, including swing shifts, weekends, holidays, etc. May be required to work overtime.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

    • Ability to understand and follow oral and written directives and keep accurate records.
    • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing, including use of proper grammar and legible handwriting.
    • Strong observational skills.
    • Strong customer service skills, with the ability to react calmly and professionally at all times and in all situations, including very tense or stressful situations.
    • Ability to maintain and establish effective working relationships as necessitated by various work assignments. Ability to work in a team environment.
    • Ability to adapt quickly to situations, and to choose an effective, reasonable course of action with due regard to surrounding hazards and circumstances in each unique situation.

    Ability to use good judgment and act with integrity and honesty in all circumstances.

    EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

    • Eighteen years of age or older, eligible to work in the U.S.
    • High school graduate or possess a G.E.D. certificate.
    • Must possess a valid Colorado driver’s license, provide proof of a safe driving record, and maintain a safe driving record for continued employment.
    • 1 2 years of customer service experience and / or previous inspection / code enforcement work highly preferred.

    The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, sit, and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, and / or crawl.

    Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

    The majority of this work is performed outdoors in all weather conditions. Employees will regularly be exposed to inclement weather conditions and extreme temperatures.

    The potential to work in hazardous surroundings exists at all times, including exposure to vehicle traffic, dangerous or threatening people, communicable diseases, hazardous materials, chemicals, etc.

    This work involves varying degrees of physical requirements from sedentary office work to very physically demanding work, due to the nature of the position.

    Periodically, the employee is involved in stressful situations.

    • Must be able to frequently lift and or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift and / or move up to 100 pounds.
    • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
