Organization : Center on Budget and Policy Priorities (CBPP)

Position : Vice President of Development / Chief Development Officer (VPD / CDO)

Salary Range : $200,000 - $225,000 (commensurate with experience)

Reports to : President

Location : Washington, DC

Work Arrangement : Hybrid in-office Tuesdays and Wednesdays weekly; first Thursday of the month

ABOUT THE CENTER ON BUDGET AND POLICY PRIORITIES

CBPP is dedicated to shaping a nation where every individual has the resources needed to thrive, regardless of their background or identity.

As a nonpartisan research and policy institute, CBPP champions federal and state policies that promote economic justice, improve health, broaden opportunities, and remove structural barriers for marginalized communities.

The organization's state work spans the nation.

CBPP combines rigorous research, strategic communications, effective advocacy, and deep collaboration with scores of national and state partners to shape debates and advance effective policy implementation nationally and in states.

CBPP advances justice-oriented policies nationally and in states in areas that include fair tax systems, health care, income security, housing, immigration, food assistance, and public services like education and childcare.

CBPP supports and funds state-level policy organizations through the State Priorities Partnership, a network of independent, high-caliber state policy change organizations in 40 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico.

CBPP also partners with a wide range of other state groups engaged in key areas of work, like income security, food security, health coverage, and housing.

CBPP has a staff of more than 150, and an annual budget near $50 million, including over $10 million in regranting funds to its partner organizations.

ABOUT THE ROLE

This VPD / CDO is a key leader in CBPP, driving the strategic direction for the organization's development efforts. Reporting directly to the President, this role works very closely with the leadership team to secure philanthropic grants and gifts, ensuring CBPP's fiscal stability and growth.

The VPD / CDO will play a pivotal role in deepening the culture of philanthropy within CBPP, building relationships with funding partners, and managing a dynamic fundraising team.

The VPD / CDO is specifically responsible for :

  • Fundraising Strategy and Execution, including stewardship, cultivation, and Board engagement
  • Organizational and Team Leadership

They must demonstrate a strong willingness to thoroughly understand the organization's multifaceted operations and cultivate relationships across various funding landscapes.

The ideal candidate’s robust management and organization skills inspire creativity and a highly efficient workflow, ensuring that the team is productive, motivated, and engaged in advancing our organizational and development goals.

A successful candidate will also adeptly collaborate with leaders across the organization, fostering a culture of philanthropy and integrating development efforts into broader organizational objectives.

QUALIFICATIONS AND DESIRED EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum of 10 years leading successful development functions with a focus on institutional and foundation giving and individual donor fundraising.
  • Proven track record in securing major philanthropic gifts and building strong donor relationships.
  • Extensive knowledge of the philanthropic landscape relevant to social and economic justice.
  • Strong commitment to CBPP’s mission and a basic fluency in policy priorities.
  • Excellent leadership, management, and team-building skills.
  • Strategic thinking, planning, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Dedication to diversity, equity, and inclusion, with the capacity to build authentic relationships with diverse stakeholders.
  • Strong communication skills and experience managing varied audience communications.
  • Devoted to collaboration within cross-functional teams.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, CRM or donor database experience.
  • Willingness to travel as needed.
