We are seeking a PhD Organic Chemist with a minimum of five years of relevant experience to join our Process Hazard Evaluation, Scale-up, and Optimization (PHES) Laboratory.
This role also involves participation in our Process Safety Review Committee. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in process hazard evaluation, chemical reactivity assessment, process scale-up, and optimization.
The primary responsibility is to develop safe operating conditions from a risk-based approach, addressing process chemistry hazards such as hazardous undesired reactions.
Experience with batch and continuous production of complex organic specialty chemicals is a plus.
Key Responsibilities :
- Conduct hazard evaluations for specific compounds and entire process systems, addressing reactive chemistry issues, OSHA Process Safety Management (PSM) requirements, facility siting, vapor cloud and dust explosion analysis, process upset conditions, reaction calorimetry, and necessary layers of protection
- Optimize processes by evaluating raw material conversion and yield, mass and energy balance, cycle time and throughput, reaction kinetics, and managing cost reduction projects
- Scale up processes, including mixing studies, reaction kinetics, and reactor design
- Document findings and conclusions in technical reports
- Collaborate with development chemists, technicians, technologists, process design engineers, and production managers through all stages of R&D, from bench scale to commercialization and optimization
- Utilize tools such as the Mettler RC1 Calorimeter, Differential Scanning Calorimeter, Reactive System Screening Tool, Carius Tube evaluations, CHETAH, and ASPEN
Qualifications :
- PhD in Organic Chemistry
- Minimum of five years of applicable experience in organic chemistry and process hazard analysis
- Strong background in process hazard evaluation, chemical reactivity assessment, process scale-up, and process optimization
- Experience with batch and continuous production of complex organic specialty chemicals is preferred
- Ability to develop safe operating conditions from a risk-based approach
- Strong documentation skills for technical reports
- Willingness to work independently or as part of a multidisciplinary project team
- Capability to supervise, develop, and coach technologists and technicians
