Essential Duties and Responsibilities :

Under direct supervision, the Teacher Aide will assist the classroom Master Teacher, Lead Teacher, and Associate Teachers by being actively involved in the supervision, care and education of children.

The Teacher Aide will accept instructions and follow through with assigned and self-initiated tasks of which the purpose is to provide primary care and support for children with a range of developmental needs.

  • Implement Children's Center philosophy of respect for the child and the importance to fostering independence in children.
  • Maintain awareness of children's needs : physical, social, emotional, and cognitive, and attend to them appropriately and respectfully.

Anticipate needs of individual children or groups of children and take appropriate action to maintain safety, security, and opportunities for positive interactions.

  • Participate in activities, planned and free-flow, with the children. Support the program, schedule, routines, and activities specific to the classroom and yard areas.
  • Set an example of appropriate adult behavior, including verbal behavior, in relation to children, for volunteers.
  • Use non-authoritarian communication skills when listening, setting limits and helping the children problem solve.
  • Be constantly involved in either observing children's behavior or interacting with them; write down anecdotal notes as needed, focus on the responsibilities of the job at all times
  • Assist in maintaining a clean and safe classroom and yard area environment.
  • Follow all current health and safety policies and procedures at all times. Learn concepts presented in monthly safety meetings.

Communication

  • Be able to take and implement directions from supervisors.
  • Convey written and verbal information from parents, and to and from other staff when necessary.
  • Provide service in a courteous and professional manner to children, parents, visitors, and all others.

Team Participation

  • Attend and actively participate in mandatory staff trainings as assigned and team meetings.
  • Actively participate in safety training including monthly evacuation drills.
  • Communicate with other staff when you need to leave an area or leave for the day. Share relevant information about the children and environment when you leave so others may act appropriately.

Education and / or Work Experience Requirements :

Education

  • Must be a currently enrolled CSUF student.
  • Completion of 3 units of Child Development classes at time of hiring. Must be enrolled in an additional 3 units that will be completed by end of semester after semester of hiring.

A total of 6 units is required.

Knowledge and Abilities

  • Ability to be genuinely respectful of children, and to understand their maturation levels.
  • A well-defined interest in and enthusiasm for young children's growth and development and a willingness to interact with children and support the activities.
  • Ability to take initiative, anticipate program needs.
  • Ability to learn readily both from supervision, training, and personal observation.
  • Able to interact effectively with children, parents, co-workers, staff and the public.
  • Ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds and interests.
  • Must be able to maintain strict adherence to all policies and procedures.
  • Must be able to be on time, prepared to work and adhere to department dress code.
  • Must be able to keep an accurate record of hours worked by clocking in and out correctly.
  • Able to consistently Work effectively with coworkers, customers and others by sharing ideas in constructive and positive manner;
  • listening to and objectively considering ideas and suggestions form others; keeping commitments; keeping others informed of work progress, timetables and issues;

addressing problems and issues constructively to find mutually acceptable and practical business solutions; addressing others by name, title or other respectful identifier and respecting the diversity of our work force in actions, words and deeds.

Additional Requirements :

Typical Physical Requirements :

Stand and walk for extended periods. Reach for supplies, manual dexterity, and eye-hand coordination; stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl.

Corrected hearing and vision to normal range. Verbal communications.

  • Ability to safely and successfully perform the essential job functions consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards, including meeting qualitative and / or quantitative productivity standards.
  • Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards.
  • Must be able to safely carry and lift objects up to 30 lbs. Typical Work Environment :
  • Art materials, disinfecting solutions, noise, dirt, dust, fumes, odors, inside and outside temperature changes. Contact with staff, children, parents, and the campus community.

May come into contact with viruses / diseases.

Special Requirements :

  • Must pass a pre-employment T.B. test prior to commencing work.
  • Must fulfill responsibilities of a CA Mandated Reporter of Child Abuse.
  • Must provide completed health screen within 30 days of employment.
  • Must provide proof of immunization from measles, pertussis and flu (Flu shot may be declined with written declaration).
  • Must pass pre-employment fingerprint screening and criminal background check.
  • Required to be a Mandatory Reporter and sign ASI General Mandated Reporter Form.
