Principal Software Engineer Viva Engage
About This Job
As a social networking product, Viva Engage has tons of interesting engineering challenges - like supporting large-scale conversations with hundreds of thousands of participants.
We deploy new code every day to our tens of millions of users and are constantly innovating to improve the system and deliver a delightful experience.
We are looking for a very experienced backend engineering leader who can provide strategic direction across Viva Engage and drive innovation and collaboration across multiple teams to achieve big, complex, and audacious goals.
Our Backend Stack Is Composed Of
- Linux on Azure
- Java and Ruby micro services, deployed as docker containers
- GraphQL, Dropwizard, Rails REST APIs
- Postgres / CosmosDB / Azure Queue / Kafka / Redis storage and queuing
- Mesos container orchestration, HAProxy-based service mesh
- Grafana metrics, Azure Data Explorer log aggregation, Microsoft-standard monitoring

Responsibilities
- Lead the design and development of major services with tens of millions of users, operating in multiple global regions
- Mentor and train other engineers in software best practices and design techniques
- Help build and maintain collaborative engineering culture
- Provide strategic direction for the evolution of the Viva Engage technology stack, building alignment with other technical leaders
- Collaborate with product, design, and engineering to deliver a delightful experience
- Continually seek deeper insights into the performance and scalability of our systems
- Experiment, A / B test key hypothesis to make data driven decisions
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, Ruby
- OR equivalent experience.
- 8+ years of experience building large scale, resilient distributed systems, and demonstrated efficient debugging skills using logs and metrics
- 5+ years of experience with multiple datastores such as SQL and NoSQL, and data access patterns
- 8+ years of experience developing and operating microservices
Preferred Qualifications
- 12+ years of professional software development experience, including building platforms and APIs for internal developers
- Demonstrated experience in monolithic decomposition and driving major technical change
- Demonstrated Ruby on Rails knowledge
- Demonstrated knowledge of Java or Ruby, GraphQL and / or gRPC / Thrift
Software Engineering IC6 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $158,500 - $276,600 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $202,800 - $304,200 per year.
