About the Job

Working for UMEMS :

UMEMS is primarily an event-based operation. It may also be mobilized on short notice for emergency assistance to the greater University community.

University events may occur year-round, even during class sessions or official university breaks. While uncommon, urgent staffing changes, or community emergencies may require employees to respond to work on short notice when available.

Duties Include :

  • Driving specialized University vehicles including ambulances, marked squads and UTVs
  • Providing direct patient care at events / incidents staffed by UMEMS
  • Supervising volunteer EMTs at events / incidents staffed by UMEMS
  • Completing any necessary reports
  • Assisting with internal and external training and education provided through UMEMS
  • Assist UMEMS as needed as a Metro EMS Region agency in the event of a major incident
  • Assist Department of Emergency Management as needed in the event of a major incident
  • Assist with administrative and logistic support of UMEMS
  • Maintain training and education required :

o To maintain EMT certification

o By the University for all applicable employees. This may include :

  • Blood and body fluid protection training
  • Mitigating Sexual harassment in the workplace
  • Data privacy
  • Comply with UMEMS, DEM and University of Minnesota Policies and Procedures
  • Comply with applicable MN EMSRB regulations and statutes
  • Other Duties as assigned.

Schedule :

  • The FTO schedule is normally flexible and include both on-site and remote work.
  • Within the schedule, it is expected that FTOs work five (5) events per month when they are on the schedule.
  • FTOs are expected to attend and help lead all UMEMS team meetings

Supervision Received : FTO staff are supervised by the UMEMS Team Manager

Supervision Exercised : FTOs are peer leaders and considered supervisors to the volunteer EMTs. This may include direct supervision, as well as training, guidance, and assistance.

Probationary Period :

All FTOs serve in a probationary role for the first four (4) months or 120 days of work. The UMEMS Team Manager may release a probationary FTO at will during the probationary period.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications : *Required at time of application

In order to qualify for employment with UMEMS, an applicant must meet the requirements listed below. Once hired, employees must continue to meet these requirements to remain eligible for employment with UMEMS.

  • Be 18 years or older
  • Possess a valid MN driver's license
  • Possess a current Minnesota Certification as an EMT without pending disciplinary or corrective action
  • Possess current CPR Certification at the Healthcare Provider level, according to current AHA guidelines
  • Certified as an Emergency Vehicle Operator (CEVO or EVOC) (Ambulance)
  • Must be able to communicate quickly and clearly verbally and in writing in English.

Preferred qualifications :

  • Active member of UMEMS for over a one year
  • AHA BLS instructor
  • EMSRB authorized EMS examiner
  • DOT Certified EMS instructor

Physical Requirements :

UMEMS employees are often tasked to provide patient care and movement / transportation. They are also responsible for assisting with the logistics of department operations.

The ideal candidate should be able to :

o Walk up or down stairs, across varied terrain and enter / egress vehicles without assistance

o Be able to stand / walk up to 4 hours continuously.

o Lift equipment (with or without assistance) of varying weights up or down stairs, across varied terrain, and in or out of vehicles.

o Lift patients (with assistance) of varying weights up or down stairs, across varied terrain and in or out of an ambulance.

o Lift 100 pounds

o Lift arms above the shoulder

o Be able to bend, kneel
