Job Summary
The Kinman lab is hiring a Staff Research Associate to contribute to their work on understanding the structural basis of cellular decision making.
In particular, the SRA would work on applying structural approaches, including cryo- electron microscopy and cryo- electron tomography, to understand how cells integrate diverse environmental signals to regulate autophagic initiation.
The goal is for this staff research associate to assist and contribute to an independent project that will produce a first-author publication.
The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.
Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF.
For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.
The salary range for this position is $26.00 - $31.04 (Hourly Rate).

Department Description
The Department of Biochemistry & Biophysics is a large teaching and research department within the School of Medicine. The department offers graduate studies in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Developmental Biology, Systems Biology, and Genetics degree programs, in addition to providing courses for medical, dental, and pharmacy students.
Each program includes interdepartmental faculty representing : the Cancer Center, Medicine, Pharmacy, Physiology, Pediatrics, Microbiology, Pathology, Anatomy, Psychiatry and Neurology departments, as well as our own.
In addition to offering course work, the department's other main goal is to provide an environment where outstanding research in diverse areas of interest is conducted.
A close, collaborative spirit among faculty facilitates a research atmosphere that is both productive and exciting. Moreover, many colleagues from other departments have joint appointments with Biochemistry, which forms an added active pool of investigators with whom we closely collaborate.
Required Qualifications
SRA 1 :
BA / BS in biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, or related science and knowledge of, or experience with, the basic techniques or methods required by the position;
and / or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
SRA 2 :
BA / BS in biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, or related science and one or more years of recent, directly related work experience, utilizing the techniques or methods required by the position;
and / or equivalent experience / training.
Previous laboratory research experience, either during undergraduate studies or post-baccalaureate employment
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior molecular biology experience (for example, designing and cloning DNA constructs).
- Prior structural biology and biochemistry experience.
- Prior experience with Python programming.
- Background in cellular and molecular biology, biochemistry, structural biology, biophysics, or computational biology.
- At least two years of previous laboratory research experience, either during undergraduate studies or post-baccalaureate employment.
