Alteryx is seeking a Senior Counsel, Product and IP attorney to support the company’s privacy, IP, and AI imperatives while assisting product, platform, engineering, data, security and other teams to develop thoughtful strategies towards product development, AI utilization, patents and trademarks, and licensing while assessing and mitigating legal risk.
You will have a deep understanding of the technical capabilities of Alteryx’s products and the company’s product roadmap and will work closely with product and engineering leaders on various initiatives and related privacy and AI compliance matters.
To excel in this role, you must have a comprehensive understanding and practical knowledge of laws and regulations across multiple legal disciplines such as emerging technologies, data, intellectual property, privacy, and artificial intelligence.
This role reports directly to the Head of Privacy and Product Counsel and DPO under the company’s Privacy and Product team.
Responsibilities : Product
Product
- Serve as a legal advisor for product and engineering teams and help build scalable and effective review processes throughout the product development lifecycle, from ideation to launch, while balancing user experience and compliance considerations;
- Implement, maintain, govern, and provide guidance and training on the company’s open source policies and practices and the requirements of its SDLC;
- Assist product owners with data mapping and documenting data privacy impact assessments and records of processing activities, updating risk registers, and developing risk mitigation plans as needed;
- Champion privacy within the business and incorporate privacy-by-design and privacy-by-default concepts into product roadmaps, and provide related training and self-service materials to product and engineering teams;
- Research, analyze, train, and provide legal direction to internal stakeholders on legal, regulatory, and compliance issues, including emerging product security and privacy issues impacting Alteryx products;
Support the development and communication of product strategies regarding product technology features and security safeguards, applicable SDLC processes, privacy-by-design, and data governance to empower business stakeholders to communicate internally and externally; and
Stay up-to-date on relevant state, federal, and international laws and regulations pertaining to privacy, cybersecurity, and data governance;
identify and assess the potential impacts of emerging privacy and security regulations to Alteryx’s business and product offerings (including related industry standards and best practices) and develop appropriate, corresponding compliance strategies.
- Build, oversee, and manage our global intellectual property portfolio;
- Identify and assess potential risks and devise risk mitigation strategies in IP-related matters;
- Guide the business on patent, trade secret, and trademark law and strategy;
- Draft, review, and negotiate IP-related agreements, such as licenses and joint development agreements;
- Coordinate with external legal counsel on IP filings, oppositions, and litigation;
Deliver IP training to teams to promote awareness of IP issues; and
Work closely with internal and external counsel to develop strategies aimed at safeguarding and enforcing the company’s IP rights including with respect to development of AI and emerging technologies.
- Provide comprehensive legal advice and guidance to internal stakeholders, including technology and product teams, data scientists, and business partners, regarding the lawful and secure development and implementation of AI technologies;
- Stay up-to-date on global regulatory and legislative developments and case law relevant to AI and update and communicate the company’s legal positions relative to such changes;
- Stay up-to-date with legal advancements in the field of AI and facilitate the dissemination of relevant updates to internal stakeholders, fostering awareness of potential legal implications and industry best practices;
Collaborate with SMEs and cross-functional stakeholders to perform robust legal reviews of AI use cases and product development using standardized risk assessment templates and deliver pragmatic, risk-based mitigation strategies for identified or anticipated risks; and
Assist in the development and delivery of training programs to raise awareness of legal and compliance issues pertaining to product development, privacy by design, IP, emerging technologies, and AI.
Requirements :
JD from a top law school; member of at least one state bar in good standing.
Minimum of 8 years active practice in a legal counsel advisory role; minimum of 5 years direct experience in product, IP, cybersecurity, or privacy law.
Strong technical background and significant hands-on experience advising engineering and product teams on privacy and product-related regulatory and compliance matters, including with respect to open source code and incorporating privacy and security into an SDLC.
IAPP Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP) or willingness to complete such certification within a reasonable time following hire.
In-house experience with a global technology or telecommunications company strongly preferred.
Strong relationship-building, problem-solving, and collaboration skills and the ability to effectively influence and clearly communicate complex concepts.
Proven ability to successfully multi-task, remain responsive and agile to changes in business priorities, and to deliver pragmatic, risk-based recommendations to the business.
Demonstrated ability to work and manage time spent on diverse projects independently and with little supervision while performing duties with a high degree of accountability.
Proven ability to apply sound judgement while managing complex subject matters and issues.
Extensive knowledge of and experience interpreting and applying complex and evolving regulations and industry frameworks.
Strong investigative and analytical skills.
Ability to balance strategic and tactical issues.
Solid understanding of software engineering terms and concepts and an ability to quickly learn new technology concepts.
Preferred Qualifications :
Project management experience is helpful.
Proven track record of managing complex, global IP portfolios.
Experience guiding teams on privacy and product matters pertaining to technology platforms is highly valued.
Dedicated experience in AI or related technology sectors would be highly advantageous.
Compensation :
Alteryx is committed to fair, equitable, and transparent compensation. Final compensation will be determined by various factors such as your relevant work experience, education, certifications, skills, and geographic location.
The salary range for this role in Southern California, Colorado, Washington, and Rhode Island is $175,000 - $212,000.
In addition, you may be eligible for other compensation, such as a bonus. Employees may also be eligible for a wide range of other benefits, including medical, retirement, financial, wellness, time off, employee discounts, and others.
