Essential Functions

OPEN ROOT TEST

  • Must pass all three (3) positions - Vertical, Horizontal, and Overhead - flux core and stick
  • Must be able to obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) card.

Welder Test Instructions, Procedures, and Requirements

You will be required to complete an open-root weld test on a 3 / 8" plate with a 1 / 8" gap for both SMAW (1 / 8" 7018 rods) and FCAW (flux-core) processes.

Examples of an acceptable root pass, cap, and back gouge are provided for your reference. Instructions to complete both tests are outlined below.

You MUST have the following proper equipment to complete your test : Chipping Hammer, Gloves, 4" Grinder, Hood, Safety Glasses, Steel-toed Boots, Welding Stinger (Whip - your stinger / whip should have a 5 / 8" quick connect end), Wire Brush and Wire Pliers.

Non-flammable arms and upper body coverage attire (leathers, denim jacket, long sleeve shirt) is required.

Step 1 :

Coupons are laser cut ( NO grinding required). You only need to wire wheel any rust or mill scale from the face of your coupon.

Your test administrator will set up your coupons in a jig for proper gap placement. A 1 / 8 " gap is required. You will proceed by tacking the backing tabs onto each end of your plates.

Step 2 :

On the backside of your coupons, you will need to apply weldment (as shown below) to your backing tabs to ensure that your coupons do not separate as you are welding.

Place four (4) tack welds on each coupon ONLY in the specified areas.

Step 3 :

Once your coupons are tacked together you are required to mount your coupons to the welding test booth jig. DO NOT tack coupons on the jig using the nut and bolt attachment located on the jig.

One coupon will be administered at a time in the horizontal position, the vertical, and the overhead position. You may NOT remove your coupon once it has been mounted until directed to do so by your test administrator.

For your comfort, you may move the bar up and down for each phase of your test.

Step 4 :

Once your coupon is mounted you may begin your test. You will receive one coupon at a time there are a total of (six coupons).

Then you will be required to run your root pass. Stop and notify the test administrator so that your root pass can be inspected.

Your root pass must be even and consistent with no porosity, slag inclusion, undercut, or lack of penetration. You must maintain a continuous weld puddle during your root pass without whipping the electrode during the SMAW process.

In addition, when using the flux-core process, you must maintain a continuous weld puddle without using the "popping" action from your MIG gun when making your root pass.

You may NOT "pop" your gun on your flux-core vertical or overhead test. All welds must be completed by striking an arc and continuing through until completely welded or until your electrode is expended.

Whipping" or "popping" your weld will be grounds for failure, and you will NOT be allowed to complete your test. You can grind your stop and start of your root pass.

Step 5 :

Once your root pass is complete and your coupon has been checked by the test administrator, you may continue to put in your filler pass to flush your weld out making sure you leave a 1 / 16" tolerance at the bevel edge of the test plate for the cap.

You may put a two- or three-pass stringer cap when using either process. You may NOT weave your cap pass when using either process.

Notify your test administrator that you have finished with your cap before removing your coupons from the bar.

Step 6 :

You are required to back-gouge your test plates. You are to remove each process, horizontal, vertical, and overhead, and they are to be placed in the same position in the gouging booth which will be shown to you.

You will be instructed on the requirements of the process and shown "acceptable and non-acceptable" test coupons. It is a requirement that you must pass this process.

Once your plates have been gouged, notify your test administrator for inspection and approval.

Step 7 :

After your coupons have been back-gouged you will be allowed to clean up any slag left on the face of your back-gouge. You may NOT grind the inside of the back-gouge wire wheel ONLY.

Then they are to be re-mounted back on the bar in your test booth. The horizontal, vertical, and overhead coupons will be mounted in the same position they were prior to removal.

Prior to capping, make sure your weldment is flushed. If needed, use a two- or three-pass cap on all test plates. Once complete, notify your test administrator that you are finished with your test.
