Capital B is a startup local and national nonprofit news organization reporting for Black communities across the country.
We are looking to hire a dynamic and resourceful interim full-time editor for our Atlanta newsroom to work with a team of four reporters covering issues that impact Atlanta's Black communities.
The interim Atlanta editor should have strong local news judgment and be adept at working with reporters with a range of talents and experience levels, leading with professionalism and empathy.
They also should be collaborative, open to sharing ideas and working with our audience teams and other local and national newsrooms.
We're a news organization driven by on-the-ground, civic, and service journalism, with an eye for accountability and impact.
The temporary editor will have the tremendous opportunity to combine their news judgment with the results of Capital B's community engagement and listening efforts to shape coverage for a unique journalism outlet.
This is a temporary full-time position reporting to Capital B's managing editor of local.
Duration : August 12 to October 28, 40 hours per week
Rate : $1,900 weekly
Location : Atlanta (In-person preferred, but remote candidates will be considered)
Responsibilities :
- Oversee a start-up local newsroom from supervising reporters to planning and executing coverage.
- Support reporters through pre-reporting and pitching stories.
- Assign and edit articles.
- Maintain an editorial calendar.
- Facilitate weekly group and 1-1 meetings with the reporting team.
- Work with the community engagement editor and audience team to ensure audience insights inform what we publish.
- Communicate with the managing editor of local about priorities, challenges, and wins.
- Support reporting collaborations, special projects, events, and other relevant initiatives as needed.
What you'll bring :
- The ability to provide coaching and actionable feedback to reporters to enhance their work and address their specific challenges.
- 3+ years editing experience.
- Some management / leadership experience.
- Story editing and assigning magic.
- An extreme audience focus.
- Familiarity with the big issues facing Atlanta, and their impact on Black residents.
- Sensitivity to the responsibilities of reporting for underrepresented communities.
