Definition of Classification :
The Lead Painter provides skilled painting services to the university community by applying a variety of protective coating to beautify facilities, protecting from environmental elements and for sanitation.
Reporting to the Director of Facilities, coordinates, leads, and provides day to day oversight of painting services throughout the university.
Oversees the work of contractors, off and on, campus and conducts job walks to ensure quality of work and to ensure proper personal protective equipment (PPE) is being used and that all equipment necessary for a project is available.
May responds to emergency needs, be on a call-back capacity and required to work weekends on occasion.
Duties and Responsibilities :
The duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following :
- Leads and performs a wide variety of skilled painting services throughout the university; applies paints, sealers, and solvents to exterior and interior building surfaces such as plaster, sheetrock, concrete, and wood.
- Performs building exterior and interior caulking, finish repair, mud and tape, and texturing tasks.
- Operates equipment such as airless spray equipment, scaffolding, and motorized lifts.
- Uses mechanized high-reach equipment to renew caulking on exterior building panel seams, windows, and doors.
- Performs special refinishing tasks including wood surface preparation, staining, and sealing.
- Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.
- Performs minor plaster repair, blending newly renovated wall surfaces with existing plaster.
- Surveys building painting project sites to estimate time and material quantities required; selects appropriate surface coatings.
- Prepares surfaces for painting by washing, scraping, steaming, patching, filling, joint taping, sanding, masking, and covering all areas to be painted, including scaffolding / ladder set up.
- Paints curbs and equipment; stripes parking lots; removes graffiti.
- Adheres to all safety and housekeeping policies and procedures.
- Reports unsafe conditions observed or encountered while completing assigned work.
- Maintains department confidence and safeguards operations by keeping information confidential; adheres to all safety and University policies and procedures.
- Works occasional required overtime based on the need of the university.
- Contributes to department goals and objectives by accomplishing related duties as needed.
- Performs other duties and special projects as assigned.
Qualification Guidelines
Any combination equivalent to, but not limited to, the following :
Experience / Training / Education :
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Two years of experience as a journey-level painter or related work.
- A valid California Class C CA drivers’ license with a good driving record is required. Note : Out-of-state licenses are valid until appointment.
A valid California Class C driver’s license must be obtained within ten (10) days of appointment (in accordance with CA Vehicle Code 12505c).
Knowledge and Skills :
- Working knowledge of protective coating systems and how to apply using the necessary equipment
- Safety rules, regulations, and procedure for painting.
- Ability to operate a variety of specialized tools and equipment.
- Ability to clearly communicate information both verbally and in writing.
- Basic mathematical skills.
- Excellent organizational skills, and detail oriented.
- Ability to work as a team and independently and with minimal supervision in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities.
- Follow appropriate safety rules and regulation.
- Basic knowledge of personal computers and personal computer software and applications.
- Aptitude to learn new and evolving technology.
- Ability to recommend appropriate courses of action within established guidelines.
- Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws and regulations.
- Understand, interpret, explain, and apply applicable federal and state policies and laws.
- Ability to foster strong, positive relationships and align both internal and external resources to achieve university objectives.
- Must be able to competently interact with a culturally and ethnically diverse population of students, faculty, and staff.

Working Conditions :
Standard office and field setting. Duties performed in a university environment while operating equipment to clean floors.
At least minimal environmental controls to assure health and comfort. Occasional overtime and weekend hours are required.
Hours and work schedule may vary according to the needs of the University. May be required to respond to emergency needs, be on a call-back capacity or available occasionally for weekend assignments as needed.
Physical Demands :
- Incumbents regularly stand for long periods of time; speak clearly and distinctly to provide information; see to read fine print and operate computer;
- hear and understand voices over telephone and in person; use hands and fingers to operate an electronic keyboard or other office machines;
- walk on a regular basis; travel to various locations; finger dexterity may be required to utilize and operate the specialized tools and equipment;
- distinguish colors and have depth perception; reach with hands and arms; pushing, pulling lifting and occasional crawling;
stoop or kneel or crouch; ascend / descent ladders, climb stairs, scaffolding, ramps and / or poles; and lift, carry and / or move objects typically weighing up to 25 pounds and on occasion up to 50 pounds.
There may be exposure to inclement weather as well as to dirt / dust, chemicals / solvents, and noise with occasional exposure to temperature extremes and vibrations.
