ROLE SUMMARY
Under the supervision of the licensed Electrophysiology Technologist (EP Tech), the EP Tech Trainee provides assistance to Physician as required in diagnosing and treating cardiac arrhythmias in the Cardiac Cath Lab.
Provides assistance to the medical staff by operating, maintaining and preparing all EP cardiovascular equipment needed for Electrophysiology studies.
Present during Electrophysiology studies and assists medical staff in placing diagnostic equipment, inducing arrhythmias, mapping arrhythmias, ablation, dealing with emergent situations, immediate post-procedure recovery of patients, and other similar tasks as directed by the Physician.
The EP Tech Trainee will require the approval of the Lead EP Tech, EP Physician, and Cath Lab Nurse Manager prior to promotion to the EP Tech role (Job Code 414).
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
EP Tech Trainee
1. Assists the EP Tech and Physician during invasive and noninvasive procedures to treat cardiac arrhythmias. This includes assisting the Physician in gaining vascular access, the manipulation of catheters, applying lesions, and suturing of device pockets.
Maintains high standards to achieve quality patient care. Communicates continuously with the Physician about the patient’s condition.
2. Assists the EP Tech in setting up, operating, maintaining and preparing all cardiovascular equipment needed for Electrophysiology studies including catheter ablations, atrial / ventricular mapping, AICD implantation, temporary and permanent pacemaker insertions.
Approaches system or equipment failures via a logical, systemic method in order to solve it and make the product or process operational again.
3. Provides a safe, comfortable, therapeutic patient-centered environment.
4. Assists the Physician, EP Tech and Registered Nurse in the plan, provision, and evaluation of patient care in the Cardiac Cath Lab.
5. Assists in Electrophysiology procedures in the role of scrub, circulator, and monitor. Monitors patient condition and documents and alerts Physician as needed.
6. Delivers care following the scope of practice for an ARRT(CI)(VI) or RCIS. Technical responsibilities are based on and limited by licensed scope of practice, demonstrated competencies, and assisting Physician approval.
Cath Lab Technologist
1. Performs all duties and follow all policies regarding cardiac catheterization.
2. Works with a computer to analyze and report data, both for physiological monitoring and the radiography portions of the procedure.
3. Checks and assures maintenance of procedure related non-sterile and sterile supplies at appropriate levels.
4. Regularly consults with Supervisor, Physicians, Registered Nurses, other Technologists, etc. in order to seek answers or to observe new procedures and techniques;
demonstrates a desire to increase knowledge.
5. Assists and / or performs quality control testing on various components of the Cardiac Cath Lab equipment.
6. Participates as an active team member of the Cardiac Cath Lab area and the Special Procedures Area throughout all aspects of the procedures.
7. Demonstrates good judgment of cost factors in routine performance of duties; maximizes cost efficiency and time usages.
8. Completes all documentation in an accurately and timely manner.
9. Maintains competency on all computer systems.
10. Identifies and pursues a personal plan of professional development.
11. Must work in an environment that involves exposure to ionizing radiation; must have the ability to wear lead for long periods of time
12. The Cath Lab maintains a 24 / 7 Call Team which may involve work after normal working hours and on weekends / holidays.
The Call Team is expected to report to the Cath Lab within 20 minutes of notification. Call rotation is based on the number of Cath Lab Techs hired into the department and is assigned on a rotational basis.
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
Education : Graduate of Radiologic Technologist and / or an accredited Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist program required.
Associates degree preferred.
Experience : Minimum of 3 years invasive cardiac experience required.
Licenses / Certificates / Registration : RCVT, RT (R), RCIS, or CIS licensure required. American Heart Association BLS required until ACLS is obtained.
ACLS required within six months of hire.
