Porter-Gaud is an Episcopal, coeducational day school serving more than 1,000 students in grades 1-12. The O'Quinn Schools of Porter-Gaud serve an additional 600 preschool students from age two through kindergarten.

Porter-Gaud School is seeking an Assistant Athletic Trainer to join the Athletics Department for the 2024-25 school year.

This is a 12 month position.

Porter- Gaud's Athletic Department fields over 60 teams at the Middle school, JV, and Varsity levels (grades 5-12). Approximately 80% of the Middle and Upper school student body participates in interscholastic athletics.

The school's 80-acre campus includes collegiate-quality playing and practice fields, two gymnasiums, and a state-of-the-art fitness center.

The Assistant Athletic Trainer works under the supervision of the Head Athletic Trainer to supervise the care of student athletes participating in Porter Gaud's comprehensive sports program.

The Assistant Athletic Trainer is responsible for the prevention, evaluation, management, and rehabilitation of injuries, and overall for the healthy participation of students in team / individual sports.

The Assistant Athletic Trainer will need to be able to work independently in the absence of the Head Athletic Trainer. Over 3 seasons, the Assistant Athletic Trainer will be responsible for the care of all athletes on an appointment basis during the school day, and coverage after school and weekends alternating with other staff.

In the event of a class and or club, the Assistant Athletic Trainer will help facilitate and supervise members.

The ideal candidate will possess experience and demonstrate the ability to successfully support interscholastic athletic training and possess personal and communication skills necessary to develop a good rapport with coaches, athletes, physicians, parents, and other stakeholders.

The Assistant Athletic Trainer will display a continuous commitment to developing the attitudes, knowledge, and skills (intercultural competence) to engage in appropriate and effective communication with students, colleagues, and families from diverse backgrounds and perspectives.

Primary Essential Duties and Responsibilities (include, but are not limited to)

  • Maintains student-athlete medical history, notes and insurance information via EMR (schooldoc).
  • Follows all department guidelines, policy and procedure in accordance with national / international, and state best practices and consensus statements.
  • Maintains a detailed inventory of all Athletic Training supplies and equipment and assists in the ordering process.
  • Assists in the development and maintains emergency action plans for all permanent and temporary practice and competition venues in accordance with school risk management guidelines and state regulations.
  • Compiles team rosters and completes athlete eligibility checks (SchoolDoc and ImPact) for each season.
  • Assists in the coordination of physical examinations and screenings when applicable.
  • Communicate with Head AT, physicians and coaching staff regarding the injury status of athletes.
  • Assists in appropriate physician's referrals and appointments.
  • Assists the institution in hosting athletic events.
  • Assists the Athletic Director and coaching staff in determining whether the athletic facility is in optimal and safe condition.
  • Helps monitor weather conditions and dangerous environments (heat / storms / lightning).
  • Adheres to Conference guidelines, including visiting team accommodations and services.
  • Responsible for implementation and rehearsal of health and safety best practices.
  • Knowledge of rules and regulations set forth by the league and conference should be maintained, reviewed and practiced to ensure compliance relative to those applicable duties.

Minimum Requirements :

  • Bachelor's degree in Athletic Training from a CAATE accredited college or university; Master's Degree is preferred.
  • Must be BOC certified and possess South Carolina Athletic Training State Licensure. NPI Number Required. CPR Instructor recommended
  • Experience working in a school setting is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities :

  • Thorough knowledge of existing system and state athletic regulations
  • Thorough understanding of the proper administrative chain of command
  • Thorough knowledge of the fundamental philosophy, skills and techniques associated with the athletic training program
  • Thorough knowledge of state and federal requirements regarding physical examinations, parental consent, and eligibility for athletic participation
  • Thorough knowledge of training rules and any other unique regulations pertaining to the various sports in which athletes are engaged
  • Thorough knowledge of guidance and safeguards in place for the safety of athletes in order to address medical injuries and emergencies
  • Thorough knowledge of the process for initiating policies and procedures applicable to the athletic training program
  • Thorough knowledge of concussion management and current trends
  • Thorough knowledge of first aid applications
  • Comprehensive knowledge of proper training room supplies within a safety context
  • Comprehensive knowledge of sports medicine, the pillars of Athletic Training, anatomy and physiology, biomechanics, and common injuries by sport
  • Comprehensive knowledge of local medical facilities and when student athletes should be referred based on injuries and / or medical conditions
  • Comprehensive knowledge of student athletic / medical file management including but not limited to physicals, injury reports, treatment logs, etc.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of FERPA and HIPAA rules and regulations
  • Applied Knowledge : Athletic trainers must have knowledge about a large range of medical problems. Assessment and evaluation skills and working with other healthcare professionals will be needed.
  • Decision-Making Skills : Ability to think critically and make independent decisions regarding the assessment, treatment, rehabilitation and return to play decisions per state licensure guidelines.
  • Attention to Detail : should be thorough and detailed with injury tracking and documentation.
  • Interpersonal Skills : Ability to communicate effectively in high stress / pressure situations when talking to patients, medical professionals, staff and families.
  • Must have the ability to organize, prioritize and perform multiple tasks.
  • Physical Requirements : While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; sit;
  • use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl;

talk; hear; taste; smell. The employee must frequently lift and / or move a minimum of 50 pounds. Medium strength is required to position patients for examination.

May assist patients as needed, helping them on and off the exam table and / or bed. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Work primarily in a traditional climate-controlled office / building environment and in outside weather conditions, including heat up to 95°ree;

Heat Index (as per the Athletic Trainer's Heat Related Illness and Athletic Participation Emergency Action Plan).

Salary : Commensurate with experience.
