Surgical Technologistsare allied health professionals, who are an integral part of theteam of practitioners providing surgical care to patients.
Surgicaltechnologists work under the supervision of a registered nurse (RN)and a surgeon to facilitate surgical procedures, ensuring that theoperating room environment is safe, that equipment functionsproperly, and that the patient safety is maintained.
The surgical technologist handles theinstruments, supplies, and equipment necessary during the surgicalprocedure. He / she has an understanding of the procedure andanticipates the need of the surgeon.
He / she is constantly on vigilfor maintenance of the sterile field. The Surgical Technologist isable to function independently in the scrub role, and function as acirculator under the supervision of the Registered Professionalnurse.
EssentialDuties and Responsibilities
- Maintainsterile field
- Prepare operating rooms andassists with patient positioning as needed
- Inspect sterile items for contamination before opening, maintainssterility while
scrubbed, maintains sterility ofinstruments and supplies
Performance ofaccurate instrument, sponge and needle counts,following
established policies and procedures
MinimumQualifications
- High School Diploma orEquivalent Required
- Graduate of a Surgical TechnologyProgram (CST)
- NYS LPN also acceptable
- 1to 3 years of scrubbing experience preferred
- Familiarwith all specialty services preferred
