General Description
The Assistant Director, under the leadership of the Director of Libraries, supports initiatives promoting student success.
In collaboration with the Academic Learning Center, Media Services, Learning Resources, and the Innovation Center, the Assistant Director coordinates projects that encourage UCNJ students and faculty to use library resources and tools to facilitate learning.
The Assistant Director also oversees the hiring, training, and scheduling of part-time library staff, facilitates the integration of AI and other advanced technologies, and envisions the library as a multi-functional learning space for the digital future.
Characteristics, Duties, and Responsibilities
- Supports the Director in identifying trends, assessing current resources, and positioning the library as a central hub for learning in the digital age.
- Researches and recommends AI-powered tools for improved information literacy.
- Develops strategies to incorporate AI and advanced technologies into library services.
- Coordinates scheduling for all campuses.
- Hires, trains, and supervises the part-time library staff.
- Maintains operations of library technical services and systems.
- Recommends updates to circulation policies, procedures, and operations to the Director.
- Assists the Director with the coordination of projects and events for the libraries.
- Participates in the development and delivery of Library reference, instruction, educational, and cultural programming.
- Prepares library reports as requested by the Director.
- Assists Director with requisitions and the annual budget for the libraries.
- Maintains the Library website, social media presence, and online instructional resources.
- Performs Interlibrary Loan (ILL) duties.
- Serves as liaison to the academic divisions.
- Coordinates Library signage, printing, and publications
- Liaises with Public Safety to resolve security incidents and maintain safety of library environment.
- Communicates with Facilities regarding maintenance and physical plant issues.
- Serves on college committees
- Participates in Library, Learning Resources Division, and College-wide meetings.
- Performs additional duties as assigned.
Education Requirements Master of Library Science degree from ALA-accredited program required. Experience
- 2 years of professional experience in an academic library or library setting and / or a combination of equivalent experience preferred.
- Professional experience in library administration, collection development, acquisitions, serials, and circulation / ILL.
- Experience in library reference and / or instruction.
- Experience in webpage design or Libguides development preferred.
- Knowledge of and experience with integrated library automation systems.
- Ability to use library technology effectively for public access, library instruction, and technical processing. Competencies and Skills Required

- This position’s duties are normally performed in a typical interior / residence work environment, based on the activity scheduled.
- Some physical effort required; however, the employee must occasionally lift and / or move up to 25 pounds.
- No or very limited exposure to physical risk.
- Some travel required. Salary $55,000-$65,000
