Job Summary :
As part of GDM's Research team , the Intern will work with different branches of the research station to gain first-hand knowledge of what it takes to run a successful soybean breeding program.
By partnering with our Nursery, Increase (Purification), Warehouse and Field Operations teams, our goal is for our Interns to develop a holistic understanding of our soybean breeding program while earning valuable work experience for the future.
Intern positions provide excellent experience that can be applied to full time positions in the industry, or in preparation for additional graduate level training in the plant sciences.
Duties / Responsibilities :
- Work as part of a team in one or more of the following research areas : field plot research, planting, plot establishment and maintenance, organizing and completing pollination, harvesting and analyzing samples, and data collection of traits important to a breeding program
- Responsibilities may be the following or similar :
- Perform data collection & sample processing imperative in the development of our world-class soybeans.
- Use cutting edge technologies in data science, biotechnology, and agricultural management to genetically improve soybeans
- Responsible for plot establishment & maintenance
- Ability to coordinate and assist with all aspects of the breeding program, which includes planting, growing, harvesting, preventative maintenance of vehicles and farm equipment, and warehouse activities
- Most duties will involve outdoor work
- As part of this team collaboration, you will assist in research methods that improve crop productivity, genetic engineering, and conservation practices
Required Skills / Abilities :
- Give and receive feedback to collaborate with others
- Desire & capacity to work outside for long periods
- Experience operating equipment (Tractors, Planters, Sprayers, Forklift, etc.), preferred but willing to train
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
- Valid Driver's License
- Express strong interest in the fields of Agriculture, Agronomy, Plant & Soil Sciences, or equivalent field of study.
Education and Experience :
- We are interested in students from all university levels, including undergraduates, graduates, and those pursuing advanced degrees.
- Agricultural background beneficial
- Competent use of the Microsoft Office suite
- Some Spanish speaking ability preferred
Additional Information :
- For Summer internship :
- The program extends for 10-12 consecutive weeks, May - August (flexible start and end dates)
- 40 hours per week with the possibility of overtime and extended hours
- Continuation into Fall Internship may be possible.
- For Fall internship
- The program extends for 10-12 consecutive weeks (August - November)
- It may be part-time to fit the intern's school schedule, or full-time if the intern is taking a semester off to gain experience as an intern
