A System Safety Engineer is needed to understand, guide, and document the demonstration of safety for newly developed Positive Train Control systems to both internal and external customers.
The applicant will be responsible for compiling a portion of, or all components required for certification as defined by CFR 49 Part 236 Subpart I and Appendix C.
As part of this process hazard identification, detailed fault trees, occasional FMEAs and risk assessments will be required.
All failure rate data needs to be established and justified. Adherence to formal processes will be required, although continuous process improvements are encouraged.
Candidate will work in a team environment and will receive mentoring and guidance from senior engineers. This position will be hybrid, with three days in the office and two working from home.
Candidate will work in the office full time during training / early development.
Essential Job Functions / Responsibilities :
- Analyze and document systems under development for hazardous conditions and provide meaningful solutions to the development team.
- Understand architecture requirements for high integrity computing solutions.
- Conduct Hazard Analysis.
- Develop system level failure analysis reports.
- Review Monte Carlo analysis results and assess their impact on safety margin.
- Build fault trees that reflect the identified hazards and mitigations.
- Perform component level FMEAs.
- Advise development team toward product certification under CFR 49 Part 236 Subpart I and Appendix C, and CENELEC EN 50126, 50128, and 50129.
Qualifications :
- Four year STEM degree from an accredited college / university.
- 3-5 years engineering experience.
- Working knowledge of probability and statistics; experience in Monte Carlo analysis is a plus.
- Attention to detail; approaches work in a meticulous and thorough manner.
- Makes effective decisions by analyzing information and considering priorities.
- Good oral and written communication skills.
- Self motivated, results oriented with a clear focus on quality and on time delivery.
- 10-20% travel may be required.
- Experience in railroad operations is an advantage.
