The Global Facilities Management and Engineering Services (GFMES) Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) department provides technical expertise and solutions to a broad and diverse customer base to identify and mitigate workplace HSE risk.

We collaborate with business areas to understand their challenges and partner with them to implement right sized operational compliance strategies / solutions, management systems and best practices in an effective and efficient manner.

Responsibilities :

The Principal Engineer Industrial Hygiene role is responsible for ensuring that the goals of a safe and healthy work environment are actively pursued in an effective and conscientious manner and provides tactical assurance of compliance with all laws, statues, regulations, and appropriate standards at all locations for areas related to exposure control and containment of processes.

This role will partner specifically with the GFMES organization. This role actively promotes the safety culture across the GFMES organization by placing a primary focus on accident prevention, hazard assessment and control, employee occupational safety and health, and will serve as the Subject Matter Expert (SME) for various health and safety aspects.

The primary responsibility of the role is to provide technical expertise, counsel / mentorship, and daily support for the following program areas : Exposure Assessment and Control, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), Hearing Conservation, Hazard Communication, and Respiratory Protection.

The industrial hygienist will assist as needed with Process Hazard Reviews, Indoor Air Quality, and Ergonomics.

This role is a member of the GFMES HSE Team and will support the implementation and maintenance of health and safety programs and processes for approximately 1000 employees and contract partners across GFMES, Indianapolis Administrative Areas and remote locations such as North American Logistics Operations (NALO), Lilly Corporate Aviation Facility (LCAF), and the Manufacturing Quality Learning Center (MQLC).

Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to :

  • Provide technical expertise and hands on service in the discipline of industrial hygiene to meet customer needs.
  • Demonstrate expertise in the following areas :
  • Knowledge of the organization that is being supported, including key contact personnel.
  • Knowledge of the technical and logistical processes in the business area.
  • Knowledge of the business planning process for planning future work activities.
  • Collaborating effectively with customers at all levels (operators, supervisors, team leaders and other management) to identify and meet critical needs.
  • Assist in the recognition, evaluation, and control of personnel exposure potential to chemical, physical and biological hazards encountered in the workplace using qualitative and quantitative risk assessment techniques.

Assessments could include, but are not limited to, ergonomic, noise, indoor air quality, protective equipment selection, and monitoring for dusts, gases, or vapors.

  • Demonstrate expertise in the following areas :
  • Applying a variety of industrial hygiene field equipment to identify, assess, and eliminate and / or control exposure risk.
  • Planning, implementing, and reporting for small to large-scale projects (exposure assessments, protective equipment evaluations, etc.).
  • Summarizing exposure assessments technical results with conclusions into reports.
  • Presenting exposure assessments results in a clear and concise fashion to customers at all levels.
  • Populating hazard information into the industrial hygiene database (Quantitative / Qualitative Exposure Assessments in Cority).
  • Maintain IH Lab at LTC-S locations and ensure all equipment is adequately calibrated.
  • Aid the business areas in compliance assessments such as Site Self Assessments.
  • Demonstrated expertise in the following areas :
  • Fundamental knowledge of health and safety regulations.
  • Recognition as a key contact for the industrial hygiene team.
  • Ability to supply tools and support for industrial hygiene program development, maintenance, and continuous improvement.
  • Educate supervision and employees on the principles of industrial hygiene.
  • Participate on customer based local safety committees and teams (e.g., GFMES, NALO, LCAF, MQLC).
  • Support development and implementation of industrial hygiene training programs.
  • Provide industrial hygiene consulting expertise to the Integrated Facilities Management Contract Partners as needed (e.g., CBRE).
  • Participate in incident investigations as needed.

Minimum Requirements :

  • Bachelor’s Degree with Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Science, Occupational Health and Safety, or other related to Health, Safety and Environment.
  • Three to five years in an industrial hygiene-related role / relevant experience.

Additional Preferences :

  • Effective communication skills, including the ability to speak in front of groups and write clear, concise reports.
  • Computer skills proficiency (e.g., Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook, Share Point).
  • Ability to provide technical mentoring and coaching.
  • Must be a safety and health role model to both customers and peers.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects and initiatives.
  • Showcased ability to balance multiple priorities.
  • Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) is preferred.
  • Previous industrial hygiene experience in the pharmaceutical or chemical industry is preferred.
  • Knowledge of OSHA regulations.
  • Previous experience supporting a 24 / 7 manufacturing or facilities management organization.
  • Experience in a positive safety culture or in helping to improve a safety culture.
  • Familiarity with Lilly Indianapolis sites; Lilly Corporate Center, Lilly Technology Center, and business areas at each site.

Additional Information :

  • Position based at Lilly Technology Center Campus South (LTC-S).
  • Position will require work activity at all Indianapolis locations.
  • Position will require work in areas where allergens may be present.
  • Must be capable of lifting and transporting industrial hygiene equipment weighing 30 to 40 pounds.
  • Normal work week Monday-Friday. Onsite presence required the majority of the time. This is not a remote role.
  • Travel is possible, but infrequent (>
