The mission of the Memory and Aging Center (MAC) is to provide the highest quality of care for individuals with cognitive problems, to conduct research on causes and cures for degenerative brain diseases, and to educate health professionals, patients, and their families.

The role of the genetic counselor is to work closely with the medical providers in the evaluation of patients and families at high risk for neurodegenerative disease.

The position participates in both research and teaching objectives and is required to track data and report outcomes accordingly.

The position may also design, conduct, and publish research projects.

Department Description

The Memory and Aging Center (MAC) is a clinical research unit within the UCSF Department of Neurology that investigates the clinical (neurological, cognitive, behavioral, neuroanatomic) characteristics of various neurodegenerative diseases.

The Primary Investigator's (PI) research within the MAC focuses on the decision-making processes in patients with frontotemporal dementia (FTD), Alzheimer's Disease (AD), primary progressive aphasia (PPA), and other neurodegenerative disorders.

Required Qualifications

  • A master's degree from a recognized genetic counseling program or an equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • at least one year of experience in genetic counseling (post master's degree); board eligible or board certification in genetic counseling by the American Board of Medical Genetics;
  • skills, knowledge, and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position;
  • Licensed Genetic Counselor in the State of California
  • Computer skills and basic statistics knowledge
  • Strong writing, oral communication, and people skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Background in neurodegenerative disease preferred
  • Experience with the provision of genetic counseling in a clinical research setting preferred

License / Certification

  • Board eligible or board certification in genetic counseling by the American Board of Medical Genetics
  • A master's degree from a recognized genetic counseling program or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Licensed Genetic Counselor in the State of California
