Definition of Classification :

Under the direction of the Director of Alumni Relations and Annual Giving, the Assistant Director of Annual Giving will actively manage fundraising and engagement campaigns that increase donor participation and annual donations through data informed audience segmentation, compelling messaging, and innovative multi-channel outreach.

Manages Annual Giving operations to ensure data integrity, strategic segmentation strategy, and timely completion of projects to optimize engagement and fundraising results.

The Assistant Director will have some responsibility for qualifying individuals and soliciting philanthropic support, primarily through one-on-one solicitation.

This position requires flexibility to work evening and weekend hours as well as the ability to travel, as required. The position may be based primarily out of either the University of Redlands or Woodbury University Campus.

Duties and Responsibilities :

The duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following :

  • Assists with the development of a data informed integrated marketing and communications plan that is aligned with the objectives of the University of Redlands and achieves annual Redlands Fund, Woodbury Fund and San Francisco Theological Seminary (SFTS) Fund goals.
  • Responsible for drafting and editing annual giving communications within a multi-channel solicitation plan including email, direct mail, text messages, social media, and phone calls.
  • Filters, reviews, and cleans donor data to prepare sophisticated, strategic segmentation of mailing lists, ensuring a high degree of personalization while maintaining data integrity.
  • Supports reunion efforts by managing assigned reunion giving committee members, creating class specific content, and tracking reunion giving.

Coordinates with major gift or planned giving development officers as needed.

  • Works with key stakeholders and volunteers to ensure that appeals and data lists are accurate and effective for each constituency.
  • Helps organize special initiatives around unrestricted funds fundraising and reunion campaigns, including targeted challenges, mini campaigns, giving days, crowdfunding and similar projects.
  • Works with Donor Relations & Communications to analyze results and identify trends in donor behavior to refine solicitation and stewardship strategies and timing.
  • Provides support for gift logistics, including recurring giving; reviewing and rectifying credit card or check failures;

supporting efforts for donors to apply for corporate matching; and answering donors' questions about their giving history as needed.

  • Maintains a portfolio of donor prospects for qualification, cultivation, and solicitation of philanthropic support, working toward an overall objective of growing unrestricted giving.
  • As part of the Advancement team, the Assistant Director participates fully in various University activities, such as Homecoming, Commencement, Endowment Luncheon, and Reunion weekends.
  • Supervises student worker(s).
  • Performs other duties and special projects as assigned or directed.

Qualification Guidelines

Experience / Training / Education :

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field.
  • One (1) to three (3) years of fundraising experience, and / or related experience in communications, marketing and sales.
  • A valid California Class C CA drivers' license with a good driving record is required. Note : Out-of-state licenses are valid until appointment.

A valid California Class C driver's license must be obtained within ten (10) days of appointment (in accordance with CA Vehicle Code 12505c).

Knowledge and Skills :

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and ability to communicate with a diverse campus community.
  • Enthusiasm for fundraising and the mission of higher education.
  • Ability to work under pressure, meet deadlines and manage multiple priorities.
  • Basic understanding of higher education advancement and development, annual giving, and alumni relations.
  • Ability to effectively plan, implement, and monitor programs.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with advancement staff and other campus partners.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills.
  • Organizational skills, attention to details, and ability to assume responsibility for completing projects efficiently.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work under limited supervision and create new strategies to achieve fundraising goals.
  • Must be able to competently interact with a culturally and ethnically diverse population of students, faculty, and staff.

Physical Requirements / Working Conditions :

Working Conditions :

Standard office and field setting. Duties performed are primarily in an office environment while sitting at a desk or computer workstation or in meetings.

At least minimal environmental controls to assure health and comfort. This position requires flexibility to work evening and weekend hours as well as the ability to travel, as required.

Physical Demands :

  • Incumbents regularly sit for long periods; walk on a regular basis; travel to various locations to attend meetings and conduct work;
  • use hands and fingers to operate an electronic keyboard or other office machines; reach with hands and arms; stoop or kneel or crouch to file;
  • climb stairs; speak clearly and distinctly to answer telephones and to provide information; see to read fine print and operate computer;

hear and understand voices over telephone and in person; and lift, carry and / or move objects weighing up to 10-20 pounds.

HIRING RANGE : Anticipated hiring range is near or at the minimum of the classification, commensurate with candidate's education, experience, skills, and training.

The University of Redlands is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs.

It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The full salary range for this position is defined as the Full Pay Range. The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position defined as the Hiring Range .

Placement within the Hiring Range is determined by internal equity, and relevant qualifications.

BACKGROUND CHECK : Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment.

PHYSICAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL EXAMS : For certain positions typically in Public Safety, Facilities, Athletics and Information Technology Services departments, employment is contingent upon a candidate passing a pre-employment physical exam with the ability to lift in excess of 50 lbs.

Public Safety Officers, in addition to a pre-employment physical exam, will also be required to pass a psychological evaluation.
