We are looking to hire a Sheet Metal and Damper Repair Mechanic to join our team! Your main responsibilities will be installing various types of dampers including fire, smoke, and fire / smoke damper, installing duct access doors, and other various sheet metal modifications.
Overview
A Sheet Metal and Damper Repair Mechanic is responsible for completing inspections on, making repairs to, and installing new fire / smoke dampers in compliance with the National Fire Protection Agency (NPFA) NPFA 90A, NFPA 80, & NFPA 105 standards and in accordance with the Absolute Facilities Group (AFG) Training Methods and Procedures Manual.
This position works in all aspects of fire, smoke, and combination dampers within mostly indoor climates, above ceilings, and inside ductwork, working on systems designed and tested as a component of the life safety assemblies.
Most of the work takes place primarily in a healthcare setting such as hospitals, clinics, and nursing homes.
Role and Responsibilities
- Perform inspections and repairs on fire / smoke dampers in compliance with the NPFA 90A, NFPA 80, & NFPA 105 standards and in accordance with AFG’s Training Methods and Procedures Manual.
- Installing new fire / smoke dampers, installing sheet metal access doors, and other ductwork related modifications.
- Provide accurate and complete documentation for customer reporting using modern technological platforms.
- Maintain professional and timely communication with customers and AFG management.
Job Requirements
- Successfully complete AFG’s training for Fire Damper Inspection.
- Demonstrate ability to read, follow, and label Life Safety Plans / Drawings.
- Must be capable of performing work throughout a facility self-directed which includes communication with customers and staff.
- Demonstrate the ability to follow inspection and repair methods and procedures, recognizing and recording deficiencies.
- Demonstrate ability to review inspection and repair reports and approve for client distribution.
- Demonstrate proper use of AFG technology platforms for timekeeping and documenting damper inspections and drawings.
- Capable of aligning work schedule with the on-site need for tools and materials, which includes unloading and loading of these materials and tools, and any other necessary equipment.
- Demonstrate knowledge and use of various sheet metal tools including accurate and proficient use of sheet metal shears, power tools, voltmeter or multimeters, and other trade related tools.
- Demonstrate basic knowledge of electrical wiring.
- Demonstrate knowledge of pneumatic controls and actuators.
- Maintain strict accountability of all equipment, tools, and materials.
- Experience in customer service and working with the public and customers.
- Must be self-motivated and possess the ability to work independently and efficiently.
- Good verbal and written communication skills.
- Maintain a professional appearance which includes consistent on-time arrival at job sites.
- Administer proper infectious control measures as per hospital requirements when performing inspections.
- Knowledge of computer software (Microsoft Word & Excel, Email, and Adobe Acrobat)
- Efficient with smartphones, tablets, computers, and chosen applications for daily reporting.
- 20% out-of-town travel required (30+ miles).
Additional Requirements
- Valid driver license with an acceptable driving record.
- Minimum 5 years experience with sheet metal / damper installation.

The employee is regularly required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls;
reach with hands and arms; climb stairs & ladders; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk and hear.
- Associate is required to spend 50% or more of inspection and repair time climbing and using various ladders to access dampers.
- Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
- Must be able to lift and / or move up to 50 pounds independently.
- Working extended hours which includes evenings and weekends (compensation provided).
