Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Research Project Assistant for the Center for Advanced Infrastructure and Transportation (CAIT) within the School of Engineering.

Reporting to the Director of CAIT, this position will provide critical research and technical support, project execution assistance, and project management skills to the Center.

The Rutgers University Center for Advanced Infrastructure and Transportation (CAIT) tackles some of the country’s most pressing infrastructure challenges, especially those that are endemic in high-volume multimodal corridors like the Northeast.

  • The bulk of our efforts fall within several broad areas : assessing and monitoring the health of bridges, roads, and pipelines;
  • creating and implementing revolutionary technologies, materials, and tools; formulating strategies to prolong the service life of infrastructure;

and training the current and future workforce. Since 1998, CAIT has been a University Transportation Center (UTC) a group of academic research institutions sanctioned and supported by the U.

S. Department of Transportation. It was named the Region 2 UTC in 2018, and since 2023 has been a member of the National Center for Infrastructure Transformation.

Among the key duties of the position are the following :

  • Focuses on the technical execution of research projects, providing knowledge in the areas of economics and economic impact assessment, planning, business case development, and data visualization.
  • Supports day-to-day operations of the Center and work alongside CAIT staff developing and managing programs with key clients such as NJ Transit.
  • Supports CAIT’s research portfolio under the guidance of the Center’s Director.
  • Generates economic analyses to quantify project impacts.
  • Works closely with Principal Investigators on collaborative research.
  • Supports CAIT staff in managing key clients and programs.
  • Position is expected to grow into a liaison and resource for CAIT clients including NJ Transit.

A bachelor’s degree in the field of Economics or an equivalent combination of education, certifications, and / or relevant experience.

Certifications / Licenses Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Position requires excellent data analytics and data visualization skills, including familiarity with economic software such as IMPLAN.
  • Also requires good communication skills and computer literacy to include industry standard software.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to interact professionally and effectively with external clients, Rutgers University staff, and Principal Investigators in a research environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Suite including Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook, and Teams is preferred.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Acrobat preferred
  • Familiarity / working knowledge of graphic applications such as CANVA and others is preferred.
  • Ability in written and oral communications, including researching, writing, editing, proofreading, and presenting is preferred.

Equipment Utilized

Proficiency in IMPLAN and economic analysis software is required.
