Fire Investigator - MFD
Position Description
Investigate all fires with an estimated loss of 100 dollars or more, for the purpose of determining cause and origin.
This is a promotional opportunity for current, sworn and permanent member of the Minneapolis Fire Department with at least five years of experience with the Department.

Job Duties and Responsibilities
- Make estimates of loss, collect physical, written, and oral evidence maintaining the chain of custody and process all such evidence.
- Responsible for photographing fire scenes, dictating and entering reports, and advising on firefighting procedures at the point of origin.
- Work as a member of a team in conjunction with City and / or Federal law enforcement officers.
- Assist law enforcement officers in the prosecution of arson suspects.
- Work cooperatively with law enforcement, investigate all deaths and injuries caused by fires and / or burn injuries.
- Secure data relative to building insurance, building and contents, value of property involved in fires, and make reports to the State Fire Marshal.
Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
Required Education
High School Diploma or GED
Required Experience
Current, sworn and permanent member of the Minneapolis Fire Department with at least five years of experience with the Department.
Required Licenses / Certifications
- Valid Driver's License
- Emergency Medical Technician
- IS 100, 200, 700, and 800
- Minnesota State Firefighters License
- FIT certified within one (1) year of promotion.
- Continuing education in fire forensics and related is expected.
It is preferred for candidates to complete the following :
- Fire Investigator Basic and Fire Investigator Advanced
- Bureau of Criminal Apprehension :
- Basic Fire / Arson Investigation
- Intermediate Fire / Arson Investigation
- On-scene Fire / Arson Investigation
Equivalency
An equivalent combination of education and highly related experience may be considered.
Background Check
The City has determined that a criminal background check is necessary for positions with this job title. Applicants must sign an informed consent allowing the City to obtain their criminal history information in connection with the position sought.
Applicants who do not sign the informed consent form will not be considered for the position.
Written Job Knowledge Exam (45%)
The written exam will be based on the following :
- NFPA 921 (2021) book. Available at the EOTF, Training Division.
- Minneapolis Fire Department Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) Chapter 7. Accessible on the M : Drive at M : Fire Fire Shared Documents 2015- MFD SOP FILES 2011 and 2015 MFD SOPs CHAPTER 7 - fire investigation.
Practical Exam (45%)
Investigation of a fire scene.
Seniority (10%)
Your seniority score is calculated based on your length of service in each rank. You will receive detailed information on how your individual seniority is calculated as well as your score after the application period.

- Practical Exam : Thursday, November 14, 2024
All testing events will be held at the Emergency Operations Training Facility (EOTF).
Minimum Passing Score
Minimum passing score for each component is 70% based on scores obtained during ALL of the exam components listed above.
Candidates invited to test will be notified through NEOGOV and email (check spam / junk mail). The City of Minneapolis Human Resource Department reserves the right to limit the number of applicants in any phase of the selection process.

THE ELIGIBLE LIST WILL EXPIRE TWO (2) YEARS AFTER IT HAS BEEN ESTABLISHED.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of information systems and various software programs used by the Department
- Knowledge of the operation of fire motor vehicles and apparatus.
- Knowledge of Department organization, laws, rules, and ordinances pertaining to fire operations.
- Ability to present findings from fire investigations in a clear manner.
- Ability to respond respectfully and effectively to people of all cultures, in a manner that affirms the worth andpreserves the dignity of individuals, families and communities
- Project management skills.
- Ability to observe and document human behavior and intervene where necessary to promote good interpersonal relationships and morale among employees.
- Ability to safely operate a fire vehicle under emergency-response conditions
