Surgical Services Technician - Surgery - Full Time/Days - Req#1996811874

Job Objective :

Under the supervision of the Director of Surgical Services, Surgical Services manager, and / or the Registered Charge Nurses.

A Surgical Services Aide must be able to competently perform departmental tasks as well as various supportive services. Tasks and care provided will be guided by the policies and procedures of the hospital and performed under the supervision of a Registered Nurse.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities :

  • Observes patients, recognize symptoms, and communicate patient status requiring the attention of a registered nurse.
  • Transports patients to and from the Surgical Services department.
  • Uses standard precautions.
  • Transports specimens.
  • Cleans instruments and equipment per manufacturer recommendations.
  • Assists with clerical duties.
  • Orders and stocks supply, linens and solutions to the appropriate areas in the Surgical Services department and operating room suites.
  • Assist in returning unused sterile supplies to the department's floor stock.
  • Assist in storing surgical equipment to their appropriate areas and help maintain the storage
  • Assists in positioning patients for operative procedures.
  • Assists in holding extremities during the surgical prepping of the patient.
  • Documents humidity and temperatures of the operating room suites and the temperatures of the refrigerators and fluid / blanket warmers.
  • Assists in preparing equipment for operative procedures.
  • Able to prepare the transport monitor, complete with modules and cables necessary.
  • Conduct equipment inventory on each operating room for readiness.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Non-Essential Duties :

  • Relieves clerical staff as needed.
  • Answers telephones and directs calls appropriately.
  • Uses computer, fax machines and copiers as needed.

  • Ability to transfer patients, gurneys, IV poles, and / or wheel chairs safely.
  • Ability to relieve clerical staff at desk, as needed.

Education and Experience :

Education

High School Diploma or GED.

Experience

One year of Acute, long-term, and for institutional experience preferred.

Required Licensure and / or Certifications :

BLS / BCLS.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions :

  • May be required to take weekend call rotation as needed by the department.
  • Work often performed under stressful emotional and physical conditions.
  • May be exposed to wet and / or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, radiation, and contaminated instruments that may cause infections, burns, or cuts which will require the use of PPE.
  • Required to stand and / or walk during entire shift, with limited sitting.
  • Frequent lifting, pushing and pulling of up to 25 Ibs., with occasional requirement to lift, push and pushing up to and over 50 lbs.

Required to occasionally bend, twist, squat, kneel and reach.
