Asst/Assoc/Full Teaching Professor in Learning Design

Position OverviewThe Department of Curriculum & Teaching (C&T) at the University of Kansas seeks a teaching professor (open rank) in Learning Design / Instructional Design to take the lead in designing, developing, and teaching courses in a new Learning Design (LD) program.

The program is part of the University of Kansas’s new online competency-based master’s programs (referred to as Jayhawk Flex), and the LD master’s program is expected to launch by January 2026.

Upon completion and launch of the program, the candidate will primarily be engaged teaching in the Jayhawk Flex Learning Design program.

The candidate may have opportunities to teach other courses within the C&T department (online or face-to-face). This is a 9-month position with summer teaching available.

The initial appointment will be for three academic years, with a start date of January 2025. This position is at the University of Kansas-Lawrence, and local, hybrid or remote options are available.

The successful candidate must be eligible to work in the U.S, by the time of appointment.

The successful candidate must be eligible to work in the U.S. by the effective date of the appointment.Job Description Teaching / Advising (.80 FTE)

  • Teach the equivalent of four 3-credit hour courses in the Learning Design program, and other courses as assigned by the department chair.
  • Advise and mentor graduate and undergraduate students.
  • Serve on master’s and doctoral committees.
  • Collaborate with ongoing development and continuous improvement of education programs.

Scholarly Engagement (.10 FTE)

  • Active engagement in activities such as course transformation, assessment of learning outcomes, development of innovative teaching practices and dynamic learning.
  • Active engagement in activities focused on teaching, curriculum, learning or other educational issues via workshops, presentations, and writing (e.

g., newsletters, websites articles).

Service (.10 FTE)

  • Participate in faculty meetings and engage in service to the Department of Curriculum and Teaching, School of Education & Human Sciences, University of Kansas.
  • Collaborate with local, state, and national stakeholders to facilitate ongoing communication, advocacy, of C&T, SOEHS, and KU initiatives.

Note : There will be a reduced teaching load for Spring 2025 and Fall 2025 to focus on the design and build of the competency-based master’s courses in Learning Design.

Time during these semesters will be used to collaborate with the Center for Certification & Competency Based Education (C3Be) to design competency-based authentic assessments, including rubrics and feedback tools for assessors / instructors.

Required Qualifications For appointment at the rank of Assistant Teaching Professor :

Doctorate in Learning Design / Instructional Design, Educational Technology, Human Performance systems, Curriculum and Instruction or a closely related field.

If ABD, a terminal degree must be achieved prior to August 2025.

Demonstrated experience developing and or teaching online learning (e.g., coursework, training, and professional development).

For appointment at the rank of Associate Teaching Professor

  • Doctorate in Learning Design / Instructional Design, Educational Technology, Human Performance systems, Curriculum and Instruction or a closely related field.
  • At least 3 years working as a professional instructional designer or similar position in a related field.

For appointment at the rank of Full Teaching Professor :

  • Doctorate in Learning Design / Instructional Design, Educational Technology, Human Performance systems, Curriculum and Instruction or a closely related field.
  • At least 3 years working as a professional instructional designer or similar position in a related field
  • Expertise in one or more of the following areas : Assessment and Program Evaluation, Digital Accessibility, Design Thinking, Digital Media, Emerging Technologies
  • Experience in the administration of online learning programs or training (recruitment, community building, and program evaluation).
  • Understanding of or experience with competency-based approaches.
  • Possess an innovative vision for online programs that includes attracting diverse new students.
