This position is assigned to the Parnall office located in Jackson, MI. The selected candidate must be within a commutable distance or willing to relocate (relocation package is available for those that qualify).

We are looking for : Associate Mechanical Engineer (Performance)

The Associate Mechanical Engineer assists in the development, design and testing of new products or systems. The Associate Mechanical Engineer works on a team with other engineers, scientist and technicians on moderately complex projects of smaller scale providing assistance to ensure that their projects meet all relevant safety standards and specifications.

The Associate Mechanical Engineer tests mechanical and electromechanical products and systems and provides support for the mechanical testing and maintenance of products in production, as well as testing prototypes.

  • OR Bachelor's degree in engineering from a non-ABET accredited university with a Professional Engineering license with applicable engineering work experience

In this role, you will :

  • Perform thermodynamic calculations for the steam turbine cycle (Rankine Cycle), combustion turbines (Brayton Cycle), and unit heat rate.
  • Perform thermodynamic modeling within the EBSILON software studying "what if" scenarios to evaluate the impact of plant projects and abnormal equipment lineups on power output and heat rate.
  • Utilize energy economics to justify power plant projects. Tasks will specifically include calculating the heat rate and power output impact of individual projects and then use to calculate fuel cost savings.
  • Develop test procedures and perform performance testing of major power plant equipment such as : gas turbines, steam turbines, fans, pumps, heat exchangers, condensers, cooling towers, evaporative coolers, boilers, and Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) systems.

Develop technical reports to communicate results.

  • Perform heat rate studies and quantify sources of heat rate penalties. Will be quantified in terms of net unit heat rate, gross unit heat rate, or turbine cycle heat rate where fuel heat input is in terms of higher heating value or lower heating value.
  • Develop heat rate curves for unit dispatch.
  • Maintain and upgrade the On-Line Heat Rate power plant performance monitoring system.
  • Assist in the design, control, and implement mechanical systems and products
  • Conduct field testing and troubleshooting of prototypes and final products
  • Perform structural, thermal, fluid dynamic, and stress analyses using FEA and CFD tools under the supervision of senior engineers
  • Provide input on technical reports and specifications to document findings that are communicated to clients
  • Adhere to project timelines and budgets, ensuring that deadlines are met and costs are kept within scope
  • Collaborate with senior level engineers on the gathering of data and feedback from customers, coworkers, and others to discuss existing or potential engineering products or projects
  • Ensuring compliance with specifications, codes, or customer requirements by taking direction from senior engineers on coordinating installation, manufacturing, construction, maintenance, documentation, support, or testing activities
  • Other non-essential duties as assigned or may be necessary
