The Facilities Operations Department at Oberlin College invites applications for the position of Electrician. This is a full-time (40 hours per week), continuing 12-month Service Employee position, reporting to the Facilities Operations Manager.
Overtime, weekend and holiday work may be required for campus support. The hours and days of work for this position will be Monday Friday, 8 : 00AM 4 : 30PM.
The Incumbent will have general responsibility for the installation, maintenance and repair of electrical systems and associated equipment for properties owned or maintained by the College in support of the educational goals of the institution, and will perform the following (but not limited to the following) specific duties :
- Layout, install, perform preventative maintenance, and repair electrical systems.
- Ensure the use of current electrical codes.
- Effectively respond to and handle various emergencies as appropriate, and, when necessary, refer situations to a manager.
- Install, repair or diagnose and maintain single and three-phase motors.
- Repair / install lighting systems and fixtures.
- Layout, install, repair and maintain access-card-reader systems.
- Repair, maintain or support electric-generating equipment, elevators, air conditioners, refrigeration equipment, clock systems, A.
D.A.-related equipment, emergency communication systems and HVAC systems.
- Install control systems from blueprints, shop drawings and schematics.
- Install and maintain high voltage equipment and infrastructure (to 15,000 volts).
- Install and maintain security, alarm, specific fire and life-safety systems (audio, visual, CCTV, fire suppression, etc.
many of which are microprocessor based).
- Utilize various electronic testing equipment.
- Repair, maintain, and inspect electrical appliances and equipment used by and for food service, custodial, student projects, or other campus departments.
- Lift and carry heavy equipment in close quarters. Candidate must be able to safely lift and carry heavy objects up to 50 lbs.
- Work with external contractors as assigned by management.
- Know and follow City of Oberlin permit requirements and processes.
- Follow all OSHA, Federal, State, Local and College safety regulations, codes and policies, including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Complete and turn in work orders as noted in the work order procedure.
- Carry a radio for communication at all times to provide coverage for immediate issues that may arise on campus as well as for normal communications of work related duties.
- Presently holds a Journeyman classification in the Electrical Skilled Trades, or have served a bona fide apprenticeship (4-year program) and have a certificate which substantiates claim of such service, or has eight years of practical experience and can prove same with proper affidavits;
- willingness to participate in training classes and seminars to improve job skills; ability to understand complex system drawings and specifications and mathematical calculations;
- demonstrated ability to utilize the proper equipment and safety procedures to install, maintain and repair typical electrical systems;
- demonstrated ability to work well in a complex organizational structure responding to the needs of diverse multicultural educational community;
- demonstrated ability to work alone without direct supervision as well as work with trainees, contractors, municipal employees and others;
- demonstrated ability to perform high-work (internal and external), and work in confined spaces; occasionally performing lifting, climbing, cable / wire-pulling;
- and work in inclement weather conditions; possess a valid Ohio driver’s license and ability to meet and maintain the College’s insurability standards;
and favorable references, including a good attendance record. Candidate must have basic familiarity with the usage of computers, computer software and internet browsing.
Any offer made to an external candidate is contingent upon satisfactory completion of a comprehensive background investigation and pre-employment physical and drug / alcohol testing.
External candidates are subject to a physical / fit-for-duty examination to ensure the physical demands of the job can be met.
This Pay Grade 9 Service Employee position will be filled at a base rate of $34.43 per hour , or at the appropriate transfer rate for internal candidates.
