Position description

UC Davis School of Medicine seeks an accomplished and collaborative academic leader to serve as the next Chair of Emergency Medicine.

This is an exceptional opportunity to build across all three missions of one of the nation's top academic emergency medicine departments.

The Chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine will also be the holder of the Bo Tomas Brofeldt Endowed Chair. This administrative endowed chair was established to give special recognition to the individual selected as Chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine and to provide supplemental financial support that specifically promotes academic excellence and innovative research in Emergency Medicine.

The Chair will provide strategic and tactical leadership for all aspects of the Department of Emergency Medicine within the SOM, including corresponding services across UC Davis Health.

The Chair will work collaboratively with the leaders of the SOM and health system to build and recruit academic faculty to support clinical program development and research while ensuring excellence in teaching.

With attention to patient care, the Chair will drive national standards and best practices within the emergency department's operations.

They will play an important role in UCDH's system-wide initiatives surrounding patient access, length of stay, throughput, staffing to volume, clinical quality, safety, and wellness.

The Chair will define and create a culture within the department that values and elevates the highest quality clinical care and wellness and satisfaction of the faculty and staff.

Reporting to the Dean of the School of Medicine, the Chair is responsible for residency programs, fellowships and undergraduate medical education activities, the department's research portfolio and clinical activities, including the delivery of high quality and cost-effective care.

The successful Chair, Department of Emergency Medicine candidate will :

  • Oversee Emergency Department operations, optimizing quality of care and efficiency, collaborating closely with Clinical Operations leadership to ensure effective patient flow.
  • Provide leadership that promotes the professional development of faculty members and attracts highly motivated and exceptional faculty, staff, and trainees to the department.

Ensure the department is recruiting the best and most diverse academic faculty and staff to meet its strategic goals.

  • Foster a culture of interdisciplinary research through collaboration with affiliated departments and centers and expand an infrastructure that fosters research productivity.
  • Oversee departmental budgeting and resource management, meet departmental financial goals, and enact policies and processes that promote fiscal accountability and responsibility.
  • Develop key institutional partnerships and strategic relationships and define and pursue interdisciplinary clinical and research goals that align with the SOM's and health system's strategic goals.
  • As the educational leader of the department, ensure an excellent teaching program for the students, residents, and fellows.
  • Serve as a spokesperson and advocate for the department at the University, across UC Davis Health, the UC System, and in the community.
  • Ensure compliance with Joint Commission, Federal, and State accreditation requirements, as well as compliance with University and SOM policies and procedures.
  • Maintain close relationships with county and state officials regarding legislation that impacts the emergency department.
  • Expectations and responsibilities as an Academic Senate faculty member include : a. Clinical service in the area of specialty, as applicable.

b. Teach medical students, residents, and fellows.c. Conduct bench / clinical / translational research leading to peer-reviewed publication.

d. University and professional service.

Qualifications

  • An M.D., M.D. / Ph.D., or equivalent degrees from an accredited institution with board certification in Emergency Medicine.
  • Eligible for licensure in California.
  • Candidates must possess qualifications for appointment at the Associate or Full Professor level at UC Davis School of Medicine.
  • Progressive administrative and clinical leadership experience in an academic medical center environment.
  • Balanced commitment to the clinical, educational, and research missions.
  • Proven effectiveness in building and maintaining a strong rapport with the leadership of a clinical enterprise across an integrated health system and its community hospitals and practice partners.
  • Evidence of success in leading and developing excellent graduate medical education programs.
  • An astute understanding of academic clinical practice and a deep commitment to clinical excellence based on a patient-centered model of care.
  • Demonstrated in-depth understanding of finances in healthcare administration and academic medicine.
  • Proven record of successfully recruiting, retaining, and mentoring junior faculty and supporting senior faculty in their research, teaching, clinical, and administrative endeavors.
  • Demonstrated track record of mentorship and evidence of having developed others in their academic careers.
  • A history of scholarly work and ability to support investigators.
  • Understanding of compliance requirements at the federal and state levels.
  • Demonstrated leadership in promoting and advancing diversity, equity, and inclusivity efforts.
