Malin Space Science Systems (MSSS) is a private technology company that designs, develops and operates space camera systems for government and commercial aerospace customers and provides services in spacecraft instrument operations and space science research.
The Project Manager will manage the development of these instruments, from fabrication through test, calibration and delivery to their respective spacecraft.
In addition, the Project Manager will occasionally be called upon to assist in development of proposals for future instruments, to perform engineering tasks within the scope of their engineering background, and / or to provide support to other MSSS engineering efforts.
Essential Functions
- Serves as the Project Manager for commercial and defense programs, working with engineering and production personnel to ensure the project is carried out on schedule and within budget, while meeting contractual requirements and performance objectives.
- Serves as Deputy Project Manager on NASA science missions, assisting the Advanced Projects Manager with systems engineering, subcontractor management, or other engineering-related or managerial tasks.
- Generates and presents review material for Kickoff Meetings, System Requirements Reviews, Design Reviews, Manufacturing and Test Readiness Reviews, and Pre-ship Reviews.
- Coordinates with Quality Management to define requirements for EIDPs, assists in generation of EIDP material, and performs final review and submission of the EIDP.
- Generates and manages budgets for firm-fixed price and cost-reimbursement programs.
- Creates Gantt charts in Microsoft Project, documents baseline plan, tracks progress, and reports status.
- Manages deliverable documentation development and submission in accordance with contractual requirements.
- Serves as main contact for customers, leading weekly status telecons, reviews, and technical interchange meetings.
- Acts as contractual liaison for programs, interfacing between internal legal counsel, executive management, and customer contracts representatives.
- Generates and disseminates requirements verification matrices documenting compliance, verification method, and traceability to verification documentation.
- Performs programmatic and technical risk assessments; identifies and tracks risks and creates risk burndown plans.
- Reviews RFP specifications and writes proposals for commercial, defense, and science programs that include technical descriptions of proposed hardware, compliance matrices, cost estimates, and lead time.
- Writes statement of work and performance specifications for mechanisms, optical systems, and / or electrical equipment.
- Coordinates with procurement team to purchase EEE components, circuit boards, metallic components, and optical assemblies.
- Disseminates environmental test requirements to engineering and reviews test plans and procedures.
- Prior to entering assembly, test, storage or developmental areas within the Camera Systems Group unescorted, receive initial and ongoing annual training in the fundamentals of Electrostatic Discharge (ESD).
- Travels to customers and / or vendors as required.

Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in a science or engineering discipline (EE or ME generally preferred).
- 5-10 years of professional experience providing engineering and project management support for highly complex electronic products
- Experience with space flight hardware, especially mechanical design, environmental test, FPGA development (VHDL), software development (ANSI C, Python or optics (Zemax / Code V) desired.
- Experience writing technical documents and proficiency in using typical office software; including database, flowcharts, project schedulers and spreadsheets.
- Experience transitioning products from design to production as part of cross-functional team.
- US citizenship or permanent residence status is required for government contract work.
- Must be computer literate with knowledge of MS Excel and Word.
- Occasional travel to customers and / or vendors may be required.
Physical Requirements
Must be able to remain in a stationary position operating a computer for prolonged periods of time, while handling multiple priorities simultaneously.
Ability to work and move around in a cleanroom environment, wearing required outer garments including smock / coveralls, shoe covers, mask, hood and gloves.
Must be able to communicate clearly with a variety of people on a daily basis. Occasionally moves about the office to access office machinery, lab spaces, and machine shop.
Ability to lift and carry up to 10 lbs. as needed. Possess mental acuity at a level which will facilitate execution of complex technical / engineering instructions.
Ability to handle high stress levels in connection with multiple conflicting priorities and deadlines. High tolerance for ambiguity and shifting expectations.
Strong analytical and organizational skills with the ability to prioritize workload.
