What you will be doing in this role :
Under the guidance of the Senior Vice President, Legal Affairs and General Counsel ("GC") and the Vice President, Legal Affairs and Deputy General Counsel ("DGC"), Senior Corporate Counsel provides general legal services expertise on a wide range of matters for Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Cedars-Sinai Health System, Cedars-Sinai Medical Care Foundation and other identified affiliates (collectively, Cedars-Sinai) with the ultimate objective of optimal legal and strategic advantage for Cedars-Sinai, and for specific projects as assigned.
Senior Corporate Counsel has an appropriate degree of independence in performing the duties and responsibilities based on experience and complexity of the project.
They strive to carry out the essential position duties and responsibilities in a timely manner in response to client needs.
The Senior Corporate Counsel analyzes and interprets relevant law, advises on strategic, operational and policy matters, participates in enterprise risk management, participates in management of lawsuits, arbitrations and similar proceedings, and maintains an understanding of trends and forces shaping the healthcare industry in the context of legal requirements.
This Senior Corporate Counsel role will (a) be the primary legal resource for technology procurements, implementation, vendor management, (b) advise management regarding HIPAA compliance, privacy and security strategies, operations and regulatory requirements, (c) advise on use of artificial intelligence and develop expertise in developing AI law, (d) manage dispute resolution and outside counsel in litigation related to technology and privacy, and (e) provide counsel related to complex information technology systems.
Senior Corporate Counsel may supervise and direct the work assignments of Corporate Counsels and other more junior attorneys in the DLA, paralegals and support staff, and outside counsel. They :
- Serve as the DLA's representative for Cedars-Sinai initiatives, committees and task forces, based on expertise or experience, as assigned.
- Routinely interact with and supervise outside legal counsel, experts, and consultants as needed.
- Strive to carry out the essential position responsibilities in a timely manner responsive to client needs and expectations.
- Develop and maintain subject matter expertise in one or more substantive areas of law that routinely or materially affect Cedars-Sinai operations.
Additionally, they may serve as the "primary point of contact" for Cedars-Sinai departments or affiliates. As the primary point of contact, they are responsible for meeting periodically with leadership of the department or affiliate.
They also stay knowledgeable about the legal needs of the department or affiliate, assuring legal needs are met by triaging work for the department or affiliate within DLA.
They may develop internal DLA work-teams to meet specific needs, and supervise outside counsel, as needed.
The Senior Corporate Counsel performs all duties in a manner that promotes Cedars-Sinai mission, values, and philosophy and serves as a role model for the values and mission of the organization.
Senior Corporate Counsel works to foster and maintain a team-focused approach to the delivery of legal services for Cedars-Sinai with other members of the DLA and with members of other departments which share responsibility for enterprise risk management.
Senior Corporate Counsel reports to and is supervised by the Vice President, Legal Affairs and Deputy General Counsel. Senior Corporate Counsel develops and maintains effective working relationships with management and staff at all levels in Cedars-Sinai, as well as with outside counsel, consultants, vendors, agents and others.
Qualifications
Requirements :
Bachelor’s degree in science, liberal arts or another relevant field of study required. Juris Doctorate, Graduate of ABA accredited law school required.
A minimum of 5 years of experience working as an attorney with a degree of independence successfully, and experience in growing and developing paralegals and less experienced / more junior attorneys to reach their highest potential required.
A minimum of 8 years of relevant experience practicing law, in private practice, working as an in-house or government lawyer, or any combination of the foregoing, representing primarily clients in the health care industry required.
Health care law generally, and specifically including regulatory (e.g., HIPAA, privacy), compliance, technology / technology contracting, complex transactions, and litigation management.
