The Automation Engineer II will work with a small state-of-the-art R&D team in Boise to bring new ideas to life that will help transform the material handling industry.

They will utilize the latest technologies to integrate robotics into material handling systems for complex applications.

This includes R&D and prototype development to successfully bring new products to market. The process involves understanding the customer's goals and objectives and developing engineered solutions to meet these goals.

Job Functions :

  • Responsible to manage the backlog for 1-2
  • Collaborate with Electrical, Mechanical and Software Engineering teams to come up with innovating new ideas and new technologies.
  • Develop the overall electrical design, including schematics, layout, and safety for electrical controls for Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) and systems developed in the lab.
  • Test and validate electrical designs.
  • Specify and select parts, evaluate their operation, and integrate them into designs.
  • Document functional specifications to support electrical and controls projects.
  • Participate in design reviews.
  • Program safety PLCs for AGVs and controls applications.
  • Program PLCs for controls applications.
  • Assist with schedule and plan that maintain JIRA project while communicating it with managers.
  • Remain up to date on all industry trends and new research.
  • Track projects and report progress and issues to the engineering manager.
  • Assist in resolving engineering issues as they arise by working closely with the engineering team, vendors, and technicians.
  • Ensure we meet and exceed our customer's expectations through superior design and implementation.
  • Complete all administrative tasks / paperwork in timely manner.
  • Ability to prioritize individual tasks on your own based while understanding project priorities from a macro level.
  • Attend training and become certified in applicable controls technologies or programs.

Travel Requirements :

25% overnight travel (Travel expenses paid by Bastian Solutions)

Preferred Skills and Qualifications

  • 2-5 years’ experience in a Automation / Controls Engineer position or equivalent degree.
  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field.
  • Ability to read electrical schematics.
  • Understanding of basic electrical theory and circuit design.
  • Proficient in ladder logic and other common PLC programming languages.
  • Ability to analyze engineering problems and develop creative solutions.
  • Comfortable working in a lean agile team.
  • Ability to utilize project management and time tracking systems.
  • Willing to work in a collaborative role with multiple disciplines.
  • Ability to write thorough documentation for new software and processes.
  • Willing to accept mentorship.
  • Aptitude for hands on electrical and mechanical troubleshooting.
  • AutoCAD Electrical or similar drafting program for documenting electrical schematics and panel layouts.
  • Industrial robots and AGVs.
  • 2D lidars.
  • Safety rated equipment and safety PLC programming.
  • Motor control.
  • Knowledge of encoders, networking, circuits, AC / DC motors and motor controllers, etc.
  • Proficient in C / C++, Python and other common development languages.
  • Experience with embedded systems, microcontrollers, Real-Time Operating Systems (RTOS) a plus.
