The City of Lake Alfred is seeking a dedicated Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator to join our Utilities Division. This position requires skilled work in operating and maintaining wastewater treatment plant equipment and facilities.
The operator will ensure the efficient operation of the treatment plant on a continuous basis, including shift work during nights, weekends, and holidays.
The role reports to the Superintendents and Public Works Director and plays a critical part in maintaining public health and environmental standards.
Key Responsibilities :
- Conduct regular readings and tests on sewage at various stages of treatment.
- Maintain and operate equipment at the wastewater plant, pump house, and lift stations.
- Remove grease, debris, and sand from wet wells; maintain, clean, and paint equipment as necessary.
- Take samples and assist in analyzing wastewater to ensure compliance with environmental standards.
- Prepare detailed records and reports in a timely manner.
- Handle and transport hazardous materials responsibly.
- Respond promptly to emergency conditions at the plant.
- Perform additional duties as required by the Public Works Director.
Minimum Qualifications :
Education and Experience :
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Two years of experience in wastewater plant operations or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities :
- Understanding of the functions and servicing of mechanical equipment used in sewage disposal.
- Knowledge of raw sewage treatment processes and relevant chemistry.
- Awareness of safety regulations, occupational hazards, and necessary precautions.
- Ability to inspect and troubleshoot machinery and mechanical equipment.
- Proficiency in reading meters and maintaining operational records.
- Strong interpersonal skills to maintain effective relationships with coworkers and the public.
Licenses, Certification, or Registration :
A valid State of Florida Class C Wastewater Certificate is required .
Essential Physical Skills :
- Normal sensory capabilities to meet job requirements, including visual acuity, hearing, speaking, and color perception.
- Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting up to 60 pounds regularly and working at elevated levels.
- Exposure to hazardous materials, chemicals, and loud noise.
Environmental Conditions :
Frequent exposure to hazardous conditions, chemicals, loud noise, and varying weather conditions.
