The Laboratory Coordinator, Biomedical Sciences responsible for laboratory and related procedures within two contexts : BISC courses that include lab sections (e.
g., microbiology courses) and the Biomedical Sterilization Monitoring Service (SMS). This position also serves as the departmental regulatory officer, which includes responsibilities ensuring safety compliance and enforcement within the department.

Duties and Responsibilities 1. Academic Laboratory Assistance Work with course faculty to assist in the design, set up, maintenance, and instruction of laboratory courses in the fall and spring semesters.
The focus will be to support our microbiology lab courses. Perform timely preparation and issuing of media, cultures, solutions, and stains.
Organize, test, and maintain laboratory equipment (i.e. departmental microscopes) and microbial stock cultures. Order and properly store supplies.
Set up and cleanup of labs. Provide instruction in laboratory techniques, safety, and the use of microscopes. Independently troubleshoot protocols and lab results.
Assist with exam proctoring, grading, and individual makeup labs as necessary.
2. Manages a team of part-time student workers for Sterilization Monitoring Service (SMS) to process client test samples.
Related duties include personnel management (hiring, training, scheduling, etc.), facility management (clean, sterilize, and prepare glassware and related materials (e.
g., media), preparing test kits, maintaining inventory, processing incoming client samples, conducting sterilization tests, analyzing results, communicating results with clients, coordinating billing with departmental business analyst, maintain equipment (e.g., autoclave).
3. Runs SMS client services and a cloud-based platform management system (QBench). Functions include client renewals, customer service functions, and a client database system.
4. Serve as liaison between the BISC department and the Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) Director to encourage and enforce regulatory compliance by providing and promoting environmental health and safety practices.
Ensure all labs / personnel are trained in the use of CHIMERA chemical inventory system, department-wide chemical reconciliation is conducted at least annually, labs have up-to-date safety manuals and laboratory emergency postings, and all laboratory emergency equipment is inspected as required.
Conduct regular reviews of department EH&S training database to alert EH&S to any necessary corrections and encourage delinquent employees to attend required training.
Work with retiring / departing faculty to ensure laboratory decommissioning procedure is followed and instruct new faculty in EH&S programs, policies and procedures.
Coordinate annual EH&S laboratory inspections and function as department representative during EH&S Peer Audits. Alert EH&S Director to any issues requiring his attention or knowledge.
Attends EH&S Safety Network meetings. Sits as a member of the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC). In that role, assist with development and participation in programs that promote safe microbiological practices, procedures, and containment by advising on laboratory design to meet containment requirements, conducting periodic inspections of IBC registered labs to ensure that lab standards are followed, developing emergency plans for handling accidental spills / personnel contamination, and monitoring MU research and teaching laboratories involved with the use of hazardous biological agents and recombinant DNA molecules for compliance with applicable regulations, policies, procedures, and best practices.
5. Participates in laboratory and laboratory upkeep. Includes the daily maintenance and monitoring of autoclaves, cryogenic storage dewars, -80 freezers, among other items.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Bachelor’s degree in biological sciences or related fieldMinimum three years of laboratory experience
Experience with common lab equipment, methodology, and research tools
Biomedical (or similar) research lab environment is required. Employee is responsible for high-impact cellular and molecular equipment, data analysis, document control, standard operating procedure (SOP) generation and compliance, and implementing new procedures and practices.
Expertise in using standard laboratory computer programs, including Microsoft products (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Teams)
