P R I M A R Y P U R P O S E :
Plan, implement and provide counseling services to students served by Special Education who demonstrate an educational need.
Evaluate students and provide therapeutic interventions to eliminate or reduce problems or impairments that interfere with student's ability to derive benefit from the educational program.
Support crisis prevention, response, and postvention for students. Work to connect students and their families to community resources.
To create a safe educational community where students with significant needs in the areas of social, emotional, behavioral, and academic skill sets can stabilize to the degree that they are able to reach their academic, career, personal and social abilities.
Collaborate with campus counselors to plan, implement, and evaluate a comprehensive program of guidance, including counseling services to school assigned.
Use a planning process to define needs and priorities of population served. Provide a proactive, developmental guidance program for all students to maximize personal growth and development.
Q U A L I F I C A T I O N S :
Education / Certification :
- Master's degree in guidance and counseling
- Valid Texas counselor's certificate
- Special Education endorsement or six hours in Special Education - preferred
- Valid Texas license as an independent mental health provider, including licensed professional counselor (LPC), or Licensed Master of Social Work (LMSW), - preferred
Special Knowledge / Skills :
- Thorough understanding of school administrative operations
- Knowledge of Special Education Law.
- Knowledge of special needs of students.
- Knowledge of Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD)Committee process and Individual Education Plan (IEP) goalsetting and implementation.
- Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
- Ability to communicate with all levels of special needs students, their parents, and home school districts
- Knowledge of counseling procedures, student appraisal, and career development.
- Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior
- Ability to present information in one-on-one, small group, and large group situations to students, parents, and district staff.
Minimum Experience :
- Three years teaching experience
- Three years as a guidance counselor
- 2 years of Special Education teaching or counseling experience, preferred
