Organization : Compass Family Services is a 100+ year old nonprofit working on the front lines of San Francisco's homeless crisis.

We provide families experiencing or at risk of homelessness with comprehensive support to address immediate needs and ensure long-term success.

Program : Compass Family Shelter provides homeless families with a safe place to stay. Each family has their own room, and access to a kitchen, children's play area, and other communal spaces.

While families are at shelter, they receive intensive support from our team. We help them to stabilize, address challenges impacting their search for housing, and find long-term homes.

Salary : $29 - $31 / hour

Schedule : Full time, Tuesday - Saturday, 10am - 6pm

Position Description : The Coordinator will design and run a fun, inclusive afterschool and weekend program for children living at Compass Family Shelter.

They also support parents in navigating systems like the school district and CPS.

This is a great role for someone who loves being with children, has a lot of initiative and energy to plan fun events, and is dedicated to supporting families who are experiencing homelessness.

Specific responsibilities include :

Design and implement an afterschool and weekend enrichment program for children and families staying at Compass Family Shelter.

Activities include on-site homework help and art projects, field trips, holiday celebrations, and other cultural and recreational experiences.

  • Support parents in navigating interactions with schools, Child Protective Services, and other outside agencies. Attend IEPs, SSTs, and other meetings to help parents advocate for their children.
  • Provide informal counseling and emotional support to children, youth and families in shelter.
  • Coordinate tutoring services for shelter children, as well as camp and activity enrollment.
  • Recruit and supervise volunteers and interns for child programming.
  • Enter client participation data into Salesforce and HSH's ONE system. Provide information for grant reports and requests.
  • Assist shelter team with monitoring of community space and enforcing shelter rules.

Qualifications :

  • Fluent or highly proficient Spanish required
  • Two years of experience working with at-risk children, preferably in a classroom or enrichment program environment
  • Strong knowledge of child development
  • Understanding of trauma informed care and the challenges faced by homeless families.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging work
  • Competence in Microsoft office (word, outlook, excel) and internet searches.
  • Must be able to lift a child of 30 lbs.
  • TB and fingerprint clearance (Department of Justice, FBI, Child Abuse Index)

Compensation and Benefits :

  • Salary range : $29 - $31 per hour based on experience
  • Paid time off : 4 weeks of vacation your first year, 5 in your second. Also paid holidays, sick time, family leave, time off for education.
  • Insurance : health, dental and vision insurance are fully covered by Compass for employees and dependent children. We also provide long term disability and life insurance.
  • Retirement : after one year of work, Compass contributes an amount equal to 5% of your salary into a retirement account;

this vests during years 2-6.

  • Work location : 626 Polk St., in the Tenderloin neighborhood of San Francisco
