The Deputy Director will have primary responsibilities of management and oversight of Native Movement’s Action and Advocacy basket area of work.
This position will supervise and work collaboratively with the Action and Advocacy directors Environmental & Climate Justice, Gender Justice & Healing, and Policy Justice.
The Deputy Director will directly supervise a team of up to six (6) director-level staff members. This position will work across teams, including in the guidance of communications strategies as appropriate.
This position will serve as part of the executive leadership team, contributing to overall organizational well-being, growth, and cross-program collaborations.
The position will eventually include representing the organization and public speaking. The Deputy Director will work closely with the Executive Director (ED) and will be directly supervised by the ED.
The Action and Advocacy basket of programs includes Environmental & Climate Justice, Gender Justice & Healing, and Policy Justice.
Each team is focused on specific campaign areas and utilizes a variety of strategies and tactics. As a whole, this basket is developing grassroots organizing power to advocate and take action for the protection of Alaskan lands, waters, air, peoples, and all living beings.
By uplifting Indigenous knowledge as vital in all strategies, this basket of programs is building resources and tools for people to organize.
We are particularly focused on supporting grassroots, Indigenous, Black, People of Color, and queer organizing power.
Essential Job Functions
Leadership
- Oversight of the Action and Advocacy basket to ensure alignment with the Native Movement’s strategic plan; this includes the oversight of all NM campaigns, in collaboration with appropriate program directors.
- Maintain collaborative and healthy relationships with NM leadership overall, collaborating with the NM Directors Team, NM Advisory Board, and community-at-large for the long-term success of our Action and Advocacy programs.
- Ensure that Native Movement’s Mission and Vision are maintained throughout our work.
- Guidance of programs based on strong political analysis, values, principles, and budgetary constraints of the organization.
- Implementation of Action and Advocacy strategic planning goals and objectives :
- Grow people power by building a strong, agile, and diverse base of engaged and aligned community organizers.
- Protect land, waters, air, people, and all living beings by carrying out strategic and collaborative campaigns related to program focus areas.
- Uplift Indigenous knowledge and healing justice as vital in all strategies.
- Build resources and organizing tools to support greater and more effective community organizing.
- Serve as a member of the NM executive leadership team, participating in organization-wide input and decision-making where possible.
- Modeling NM’s core values, including maintaining a positive, professional, and supportive organizational culture.
- Work closely with the Executive Director and serve as acting ED if needed.
- Engage with the NM Legal Board and Advisory Board as needed.
Staff Supervision
- Supervision of NM Action and Advocacy Directors team.
- Combination of in-person and remote supervision.
- Ensure that the established goals are being met and that staff have the support they need.
- Collaborate with the Executive Director and Administrative Director to resolve conflict or situations according to our guiding principles.
- Possible supervision of other staff, as appropriate and within manageable limits.
- Lead the recruitment, hiring, training, supervision, and evaluation of NM staff according to the NM values and organizational goals.
Non-Essential Job Functions
Additional or shifted responsibilities to be identified as the organization evolves.
Supervision Received and Exercised
This position will report to the Executive Director. Additionally, this position supervises five to seven director- and / or manager-level staff members.
Remote supervision will be required.
Additional Job Information
This position requires regular attendance in accordance with the established schedule as this is the most common time to conduct business with team members and partners.
Some work on weekends or outside of regular hours may be required, such as emergency response, community events, or irregular meetings.
Employees must also possess the following abilities :

- Ability to refrain from violence.
- Ability to work in cooperation across organizational programs.
Work Environment and Demands of the Role

Generally, the office environment is calm, with some days of higher activity due to organizational events. Some noise from people in the office is expected, and may increase during events.

This position may require travel within and outside the state. Possibility of a flexible schedule and may need to be available for evenings and / or weekends.
Location
This position is required to be in Alaska. Fairbanks or Anchorage are preferred locations, however other Alaska locations will be considered for qualified candidates.
Reliable and adequate access to internet and phone reception is required.

Job Qualifications :
- Must have a real and authentic understanding of some amount of Alaska Native ways of life (we do not expect anyone to be an expert on all tribes or diversities of ways of life).
- Must have experience working with Alaska Native and / or Indigenous communities both rural and urban (i.e. cultural practices, potlatches, ceremony).
- Ability to assess impact with a strong lens of justice, equity, and social / community responsibility.
- Experience developing and implementing strategic plans.
- Strong political analysis as associated with environmental and climate justice, LGBTQ2S rights, MMIWG2S, and other social justice issues.
- Demonstrated knowledge and relevant experience in grassroots community organizing.
- Strong understanding of critical race theory and its relationship to colonialism, capitalism, patriarchy and other such oppressive systems.
- Strong understanding of Native Movement’s vision and mission.
- Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to build trust and maintain relationships with staff across the organization and externally.
- Prior supervision experience required.
- Excellent analysis, diagnostic, problem-solving skills using collaborative methods.
- Excellent oral and written communication ability, including the ability to explain concepts in simple language and relate them to organizational goals.
- Experience developing and / or managing administrative tasks and needs is highly preferred.
- Outstanding organizational and time-management skills; detail-oriented.
- Working knowledge of online tools for process management, including Google Suite, DocuSign, and Slack.
- Excellent self-discipline; must be proactive and a self-starter.
- Not essential : understanding or practice of conflict-resolution practices and / or trauma-informed language?
- Ability to travel within and outside Alaska as needed.
