POSITION
Livonia Public Schools is seeking a highly qualified Behavior Intervention Specialist with knowledge and skills necessary to assist individuals, groups and systems through the application of positive behavior supports and trauma informed care.
The Behavior Intervention Specialist helps coordinate Functional Assessments of Behavior and Behavior Intervention Plans that address students' inappropriate behaviors and states of dysregulation and provides a means to help the students become more academically successful.
The Behavior Intervention Specialist also provides classroom and school-wide behavior management strategies and trauma informed care.
The Behavior Intervention Specialist provides leadership and direction at the school and district level, working to design, implement, coordinate and evaluate a comprehensive behavior support program.
In addition, the Behavior Intervention Specialist works directly with identified students to learn replacement behaviors and utilize help and / or calming strategies that substantially improves their sense of well-being and increase their academic performance.
Under the supervision of Student Services, the Behavior Intervention Specialist will provide diversified preventative and intervention strategies and activities specifically designed for targeted students and for students in crisis.

Livonia Public Schools employs approximately 1,800 staff members, serving approximately 13,200 students pre-K - post secondary.
There are 15 elementary schools, 3 middle schools, 3 high schools, 1 career technical center, 1 early childhood center and 1 vocational and transition center in the School District.
The annual budget for Livonia Public Schools is $175 million, with a state funding of $9,608 per pupil.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :
The following is a list of minimum qualifications for this position, any one of which may be waived by the Administration in exercising its prerogative to determine qualifications.
- Minimum of five years successful experience in which the education of and / or intervention assistance for "at risk" and / or "behaviorally challenged" students was an important responsibility for the position
- Expert knowledge of function-based intervention planning for developing behavior change strategies that focuses on reducing problem behavior and increasing more appropriate behavior
- Expert knowledge of techniques needed to successfully complete effective Functional Behavior Assessments (FBA), function -based interventions, and Behavior Intervention Plans (BIP)
- Exceptional knowledge in the use of assessment and assessment data to inform instruction and prescribe work plans for individual students
- Expert knowledge in research based instructional strategies and ability to implement them effectively
- Demonstrate ability to plan and evaluate strategies for improving instruction
- Ascribes to the philosophy that all children can succeed and demonstrates the commitment to do what is necessary to make this a reality
- Extensive experience working with children with complex behavioral needs, including but not limited to, children with Autism Spectrum Disorders, Emotional Impairments, and Intensive Needs due to other factors including mental health and trauma
- Proficiency in completing Functional Behavioral Assessments and developing, implementing and evaluating the effectiveness of corresponding Behavior Intervention Plans
- Professional Licensure or certification related to mental health, behavioral interventions, and / or crisis intervention
- Experience in training / collaborating with staff on behavioral interventions, functional behavioral thinking and trauma informed care

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIP :
The Behavior Intervention Specialist is assigned and responsible to the Department of Student Services, which has responsibility for the system-wide program for students with disabilities.
MAJOR FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES :
- Creates and contributes to a welcoming and positive climate and culture
- Exhibits a commitment to the District's Shared Vision and Collective Commitments
- Assists with improving the district's capacity to prevent behavioral problems through the development of school-wide (Tier 1) school wide positive behavior intervention supports (PBIS) and trauma informed care (TIC) knowledge and systems
- Provides professional development for staff, including administrators, teachers / professional staff, and paraprofessionals to learn PBIS and TIC guiding principles, and options for ways of interacting with students that lower the likelihood of student misbehavior and dysregulation, while supporting students' academic, behavioral, and interpersonal / social success
- Works with building and district administrators to identify and train key building staff, including Student Services staff, to be resources to building colleagues for Tier I (school wide), Tier II (small group), and Tier III (individualized plans) PBIS Systems including those modified to address the needs of specific students requiring mental health and / or trauma sensitivity
- Develops schools' (including each school team's) capacity to conduct Functional Behavioral Assessments (FBAs) by developing awareness of their importance, the research basis related to their role in developing effective Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs), the many different avenues of data gathering, and how to develop hypotheses regarding the function of target (problematic) behaviors
- Develops schools' (including each school team's) implementation of FBAs with fidelity by utilizing accountability systems that identify action steps / responsibilities of team members resulting in an FBA document that specifically states the data-based hypothesis for the function of each student's target (problematic) behaviors that will become a key component of the BIP
- Assists school teams conducting simple and intensive FBAs and creating BIPs for specific students
- Works with the Behavior Response Teams (BRT) and assists school teams in the development of Emergency Intervention Plans (EIPs)
- Consults with administrators, school social workers, school psychologists, teacher-ASD / consultants, teachers, and other building team supports for academic, behavioral, socio-emotional, mental health and trauma related questions and concerns
- Facilitates parent involvement / participation in special education and other problem-solving meetings including Home - School planning with parents and school teams
- Assists and / or develop and maintain and helps schools maintain home-school communication to facilitate problem solving, adheres to compliance requirements, supports procedural safeguards, and / or to mitigates crisis situations
- Coordinates and conducts and help schools provide parent education regarding educational, behavioral and / or socio-emotional needs of students
- Assists and help schools provide parents obtain available community resources for students with significant behavioral and / or mental health related concerns
- Attends professional development opportunities relevant to mental health, behavioral, socio-emotional, and trauma sensitive interventions applicable to students in the school setting
- Attends if requested and in other ways support administrators, school teams, and / or individual professionals for REED, MET, IEPT, MDR, and IAES meetings and other special education or Section 504 related problem solving meetings
- Consults and / or contribute to the development of academic interventions for classrooms, selected students and / or individual students including engagement strategies, accommodations, assistive technology, adjustment for instructional level, and motivation plans
- Maintains an outreach to community resources
- Consults and / or contributes to the development interventions designed for students to take ownership, and responsibility that supports development of their independence
- Conducts conflict resolution and restorative practice sessions
- Organizes and schedules time commitments to meet demands of the job
- Executes other duties and assumes other responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT :
The work year, salary, and fringe benefits will be consistent with the current agreement between the Board of Education and the Livonia Education Association.
