Position Summary
The Director of Campus Safety spearheads and oversees the operations of the Department of Campus Safety, ensuring efficiency and smooth workflow.
In this capacity, the Director is responsible for assuring the department’s participation as a full educational partner in student development, in keeping with the college’s Code of Community Responsibility and educational mission while building confidence and authentic relationships with students, faculty, and staff.
Responsibilities include setting goals, budget management, representing the department, liaising with shareholders on and off campus, and monitoring the progress of operations.
Moreover, the Director leads and encourages staff to reach goals while implementing the college’s mission and policies. Supervision is exercised over the Assistant Director of Campus Safety, Campus Safety Officers, Communications Specialists, Operations Manager, Access Control and Security Specialist, and other assigned personnel.
Responsibilities
Plan, implement, supervise, coordinate, monitor, and evaluate the specific functions and services of the Campus Safety Department, including operating policies, procedures, and methods.
Ensure that they are uniformly executed and conveyed in a clear and consistent manner to students, faculty, and employees of the College
- Assist in developing and modifying services and procedures to meet institutional and community needs.
- Develop and provide community education with an emphasis on safety practices and crime prevention.
- Lead departmental diversity initiatives and partner with others on campus to facilitate a broader understanding of Campus Safety’s role in more comprehensive institutional initiatives around diversity, equity, and inclusion.
- Serve as a liaison and collaborate successfully with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies.
- Hire, train, and supervise the Campus Safety staff. Serve as a role model for the department’s participation in the college’s educational mission, setting and assuring standards of participation, interaction, and assistance with all constituencies.
- Plan and conduct training programs and staff meetings. Confer regularly with staff to plan and coordinate activities, assign and check work, assist with unusual or difficult situations, and resolve problems.
- Plan staffing needs and work schedules to ensure 24-hour coverage, 365 days a year.
- Plan, request, and administer the department’s operating budget. Recommend expenditures to accommodate the growth and development of the department.
- Carry out a variety of planning activities related to security and traffic operations, such as developing contingency plans for handling emergency situations, planning security coverage and parking / traffic arrangements for special events, and the like.
- Monitor all department operations regularly. Assist others in managing a variety of problems that arise on a daily basis.
Ensure that all applicable College safety, security, parking, and traffic rules and regulations are properly enforced by Campus Safety personnel.
- Supervise campus parking and traffic operations, including data management, planning parking assignments, and supervising parking and traffic regulation enforcement.
- Oversee the administration of the Help and Observation in a Protected Environment (HOPE) program to include, hiring, training, scheduling, and supervision.
- Oversee the administration of the College identification card system.
- Oversee the administration of the College’s 15-passenger van operator policy and procedures including driver training and operator’s motor vehicle record checks.
- Oversee the administration of the access control program to include the production and distribution of keys, repair, and replacement of locking devices, and future systems implementation.
- Oversee the administration of a campus dispatching and communication system with 24-hour coverage.
- Oversee ongoing fire drills and safety inspections, ensuring compliance with applicable codes and regulations.
- Investigate criminal acts on campus.
- Confer regularly with the Associate Dean of Students and a wide range of CSC personnel and students, as well as local law enforcement and rescue / hospital personnel, and other community members, to plan, coordinate, and evaluate services / activities, coordinate the handling of emergencies and various safety / security / traffic problems.
- Plan and administer appropriate departmental records systems, and prepare various administrative / operations reports.
- Participate in committee assignments requiring security and threat assessment expertise to include the Behavioral Intervention Team, Sexual Assault and Violence Education Committee, and the Safety Committee.
- Promote and maintain professional security and emergency management affiliations and up-to-date knowledge of both technical and legal developments in the fields.
- Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and educational rights and privacy acts pertaining to security, fire safety, and emergency preparedness.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or greater from a regionally accredited institution preferred, or a combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills are acquired.
- Five to seven years of relevant training and experience in public safety / law enforcement / fire service / military, or education.
- Extensive knowledge of safety / security and emergency management protocols, disaster assessment, planning, response and recovery operations
- Knowledge of federal codes and regulations as related to safety / security, internal fire codes, and codes of other related agencies such as the National Fire Prevention Association, EPA, and FEMA.
- In-depth understanding of state and local government disaster recovery protocols
- Ability to create and implement a comprehensive safety and emergency response plan
- Strong oral and written communication skills demonstrating tact and diplomacy
- Ability to perform under stress and intense pressure
- Strong leadership and supervisory skills
- Availability to work evening and night shifts where necessary and be on call 24 hours / day.
