Clinical Assistant Professor, Instrumental Music Education Posting

The School of Music at the University of Alabama is seeking applications for a full-time clinical

assistant professor with expertise in instrumental music education at the college and secondary

school levels. This non-tenure-earning position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the

development of a new generation of teachers focused on music education in middle school settings.

Qualifications

The ideal applicant will have at least five years of successful teaching experience as a state-

certified instrumental music educator and additional experience as a college-level instructor in

preservice teacher education. Applicants must hold a doctoral degree emphasizing music education.

ABDs will be considered pending degree conferral by August 1, 2024. Preferred college teaching

experiences include leading courses focused on :

  • Beginning brass, percussion, strings, and / or woodwinds.
  • Secondary instrumental methods for band and / or orchestra.
  • Introducing or orientating new music education majors.
  • Supervising or assessing interns.

Candidates with administrative experience and proficiency as a conductor are encouraged to apply.

Excellent writing and presentation skills, as shown by conference presentations and publications,

are essential for full consideration.

Responsibilities

The selected candidate will work closely with School of Music faculty and partner with in-service

educators to build a collaborative teacher preparation program. The successful candidate will :

Teach assigned undergraduate courses in instrumental methods, music education, clinical

experiences, class instruments, and other areas based on the candidate's interests and experiences.

Work closely with Music Education faculty to foster a positive program in curriculum, program

administration, clinical supervision, outreach, and recruiting undergraduate and graduate students.

  • Serve on committees in the School of Music and College of Education.
  • Continue developing a national and international reputation as an expert in instrumental music

education, consistent with the expectations of a comprehensive School of Music at a major research

institution.

Engage in service / academic citizenship and maintain an outstanding level of performance in the

classroom and other instructional settings, thus contributing to the overall instructional

effectiveness of the School of Music.
