SAFETY SPECIALIST I

POSITION GOAL

To reduce the number of employee and student injuries and coordinate the functions of the local, state and federal requirements for health and safety.

To recommend the improvement of unsafe or unsanitary conditions in school facilities in accordance with the State Requirements for Educational Facilities (SREF).

ESSENTIAL PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES

The Safety Specialist I shall carry out the performance responsibilities listed below.

  • Identify hazardous locations enroute to and from school or school bus stop.
  • Investigate student accidents and accident claims.
  • Identify the unsafe conditions and / or acts relating to employees.
  • Investigate employee injuries to determine cause.
  • Periodically inspect vehicles and equipment operated by School Board employees to evaluate their condition.
  • Inspect all school facilities throughout the County for Fire, Casualty and Sanitation in accordance with State Requirements for Educational Facilities (SREF).
  • Perform and promote all activities in compliance with the equal employment and non-discrimination policies of The School Board of Broward County, Florida.
  • Participate in training programs offered to enhance the individual skills and proficiency related to job responsibilities.
  • Review current developments, literature and technical sources of information related to job responsibilities.
  • Ensure adherence to safety rules and procedures.
  • Follow federal and state, as well as School Board policies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor or designee.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

  • A standard high school diploma or satisfactory completion of an approved General Educational Development (GED) Testing program.
  • A minimum of four (4) years of experience and / or training in the field related to the title of the position.
  • Current certification for Fire Safety Inspector from the State of Florida, Department of Insurance, Division of State Fire Marshal, within one year.
  • Verification of completion of course conducted by the State Department of Education to inspect existing school facilities in accordance with State Requirements for Educational Facilities (SREF).
  • Have knowledge of roads and streets throughout the County as they pertain to student safety enroute to and from school.
  • Knowledge of accident prevention techniques.
  • Have knowledge of the state and federal regulations as they pertain to safety and health.
  • Computer skills as required for the position.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

Bilingual skills preferred.

SIGNIFICANT CONTACTS-frequency, contact, purpose

On a daily basis works with personnel throughout Transportation Services to assist with the administration and supervision of shift personnel within assigned transportation terminal.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Light work : Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and / or up to 10 pounds of force frequently as needed to move objects.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

Salary and benefits shall be paid consistent with the District's approved compensation plan. Length of the work year and hours of employment shall be those established by the School Board.
