POSITION SUMMARY
The Chief of Staff will serve as an essential strategic and operational partner to the President of Philanthropy, contributing significantly to furthering the mission of Ballmer Group.
In this role, the Chief of Staff will function as a trusted advisor to and proxy for the President, with a primary objective of optimizing the President’s time.
The role will partner closely with leadership team members and other staff to ensure seamless cross-functional integration of multiple initiatives and deliver results.
We seek an experienced and adept individual with a proven track record in supporting executive leadership, fostering strong relationships, spearheading initiatives, and implementing strategic visions.
This role requires spanning internal and external boundaries and skillful shifting between tactical implementation to strategic advising and influencing.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
The Chief of Staff’s responsibilities will encompass three primary areas :
Ensure President’s highest and best use of time
- Monitor and oversee the President's schedule and priorities, ensuring that objectives are tracked and achieved, while also carving out time for the President to participate as a strategic collaborator with the leadership team.
- Attend meetings and events alongside or in representation of the President, ensuring timely follow-up on all action items.
- Provide consistent and relevant briefing information to President, synthesizing information when necessary and ensuring she is prepared for every engagement.
- Proactively anticipate the needs and potential obstacles of both the President and the organization and prepare solutions in advance.
- Partner closely with the President’s Executive Assistant to maintain alignment between the President’s time, schedule, and priorities.
Facilitate cross-functional integration
- Foster a collaborative and tightly knit team that is aligned on goals and strategic objectives.
- Facilitate leadership team meetings to ensure effectiveness and productivity; introduce structure, processes, and mechanisms, as necessary, to enhance alignment and facilitate information and knowledge sharing.
- Understand the interconnectedness of different initiatives and projects, identify needs, and ensure key individuals are included in relevant discussions;
serve as a knowledge hub for the leadership team.
Champion the organization's culture and values by staying attuned to team dynamics, leading by example, modeling behaviors, and serving as a trusted resource and confidant where appropriate.
Deliver results on behalf of the President
- Facilitate communication between the President and the Founders, when needed.
- Translate the President’s vision and ideas into actionable steps, gain buy-in from stakeholders, and effectively project manage them to completion.
- Lead special projects and organizational initiatives, ensuring progress without needing the President’s detailed involvement.
- In partnership with the President and other senior leaders, develop, manage, and execute an external engagement strategy for the President.
KEY QUALIFICATIONS
- Senior-level Chief of Staff with 10-15 years of professional experience, including 6-8 years in cross-functional leadership roles.
- A consistent record of collaboration with high-performing teams and seasoned leaders to achieve desired outcomes.
- High emotional intelligence and outstanding interpersonal skills; adept at engaging with senior leadership and cultivating relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
- Professionalism, tact, and diplomacy. Discernment to operate across a wide range of stakeholders while maintaining a high level of confidentiality.
- Demonstrated expertise in change management, including communicating change, gaining buy-in, and resolving conflicts to ensure smooth transitions.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to independently draft communications in their own and another person’s voice.
- Ability to synthesize complex information efficiently and effectively.
- Strong systems thinking and experience in process improvement, with the judgment to introduce change when needed.
- Excellent project management skills, particularly across complex and / or organization-wide initiatives.
Compensation
The starting cash compensation range for the Chief of Staff role in Bellevue, WA includes an annual base salary hiring range of $181,000 to $227,000 , plus a 10% annual performance bonus target opportunity.
The annual base salary maximum for the role is $272,400. We aim to hire new employees within the hiring range to allow future compensation growth.
Individual pay increases are assessed annually based on multiple factors such as demonstrated skill in the role and context, progress and performance against goals, and increased experience.
